Martin Brundle stated that no Formula 1 team would tolerate Esteban Ocon’s aggressive mentality when competing against his teammates.
Esteban Ocon (via IMAGO) had a disastrous race. The French driver attempted to overtake his teammate on the first lap, resulting in a massive collision that forced him to retire. Alpine has already issued a warning to Ocon about the potential consequences of his actions. Now, the F1 presenter has warned the Alpine driver about his history of incidents in the sport.
Ocon has had similar incidents in the past, both with Sergio Pérez at Force India and with Fernando Alonso at Alpine. Brundle pointed out that, while the Frenchman is undeniably a fast driver, he seems to display irrational aggressiveness when competing against his teammates.
He stated that this behavior will have serious consequences for Esteban Ocon. No top-level team would want a driver with such a combative mentality. Brundle even suggested that this could be the case for all teams. It has been reported that Alpine is considering replacing Ocon as soon as the next race in Canada.
In Formula 1, a teammate is a driver’s main competitor. Given the different performance levels across the grid, only drivers with identical cars can be accurately compared in terms of pace. However, it is crucial to avoid colliding with a teammate, as this would be catastrophic for the team.
Martin Brundle emphasized that Formula 1 is a team sport with numerous people working behind the scenes at the factory. Teams invest millions in car development, and sponsors pay significant amounts to have their logos displayed on the cars. Therefore, Brundle categorically stated that Esteban Ocon cannot afford to engage in on-track battles with his teammate.
After the incident, Esteban Ocon issued an apology. However, it seems that the Frenchman’s future with the team is now uncertain. Ocon is likely to be allowed to continue racing for the remainder of the season, but one more mistake could result in his departure from the Enstone-based team.
