Pierre Gasly, from the Alpine F1 Team A524, is seen on the starting grid on May 26, 2024. This occurs during the Formula 1 World Championship, specifically the Monaco Grand Prix on Race Day in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
In an effort to address concerns among the Formula 1 teams, the FIA announced that maternity leave and staff entertainment will not be included in the revised cost cap system to be implemented in 2026. The cost cap was introduced in 2021 to promote fairness in the sport by imposing a spending limit on all 10 teams. Currently set at around $135 million, the plan is to increase the cap to $220 million in 2026, while expanding the range of expenses covered. However, after facing resistance from the teams, the FIA decided to exclude items such as maternity leave and team activities from the cost cap.
Federico Lodi, Head of Single-Seater Financial Regulations at the FIA, explained that various exclusions were considered during discussions with the teams. This included the possibility of including costs related to maternity/paternity leave and entertainment within the cost cap. However, during the recent F1 Commission meeting, it was unanimously agreed that these expenses should remain outside the scope of the cost cap.
The goal behind the cost cap increase is to simplify regulations and incorporate more parameters. Inflation and the expansion of the F1 calendar are also factors to be taken into account. However, as highlighted by Christian Horner, Team Principal of Red Bull Racing, it is crucial that changes to the cost cap do not disproportionately burden the team. Finding a balance is key, according to Horner, who emphasized the importance of ensuring that staff are not adversely affected by these changes in 2026.
For example, can a holiday celebration during the Christmas season really improve the speed of your vehicle? Now, if this particular event is included in the budget, naturally every technical director will prioritize a front wing over a Christmas party, as the former is more essential.
Therefore, it becomes crucial to find a balance. I am not insinuating that our technical director does not enjoy Christmas parties, but his preference is for front wings.
So, the challenge is to find a middle ground where employees do not bear the burden of this situation.
With Lodi’s confirmation, Pierre Wache can now enjoy both front wings and Christmas parties. Although most of the team’s concerns have been addressed, Alessandro Alunni Bravi, Sauber team representative, raised an interesting point on Friday.
Bravi suggested the high cost of living in Switzerland, where Sauber is located, and hopes that the new cost cap will strike a balance that does not negatively impact his team.
“I believe it will be crucial for teams like ours to introduce a factor that can, in a way, equalize the discrepancies in terms of the cost of living,” he stated.
“I think it’s important to put all teams on equal footing, at least as a starting point, so that the difference lies in the skills of the individuals and the quality of their work, rather than other factors that could undermine this initial point.”
