Inside Adrian Newey’s Controversial Exit from Red Bull: Coulthard Reflects on Uncomfortable Split

Formula 1 design ace Adrian Newey has been pleasantly taken aback by the work ethic of Lance Stroll, according to Ralf Schumacher, the six-time Grand Prix winner. Schumacher relayed this information, stating that Newey himself expressed these sentiments following his surprise departure from Red Bull and subsequent move to Aston Martin.

Newey, a titan in the F1 design arena, has an illustrious career with over 200 race victories and 26 titles under his belt. He now holds the newly minted position of managing technical partner at Aston Martin, and at 66, is also a shareholder in the team.

With this move, Newey has finally had the chance to collaborate with one of the drivers at the top of his wishlist, two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso. However, it’s the other driver in the Aston Martin garage, Lance Stroll, who has been making waves and catching Newey’s attention.

Schumacher, during a stint on the Backstage Boxengasse Podcast, dismissed rumors suggesting that Newey planned to show both Alonso and Stroll the exit door in preparation for the F1 2026 major reset, a time when new chassis and engine regulations will come into play.

Schumacher defended Stroll, explaining that Newey, during their time together in South Africa, actually appreciated what he saw from the young driver. He added that Newey’s focus now is on the 2026 challenge with Aston Martin.

Schumacher shared that Newey, despite his busy schedule, found Stroll’s working style impressive. He noted, “Newey told me himself that he is actually positively surprised by Lance Stroll’s way of working. He seems to have a lot more energy than when he’s shuffling around the paddock.”

Meanwhile, rumors of Stroll leaving his father’s team to venture into a tennis career have been put to rest by the young driver himself. Ahead of the F1 2025 season, Stroll laughed off the rumors on The Fast And The Curious podcast, clarifying he doesn’t possess the skills to compete professionally in tennis.

Stroll and Alonso are both contracted with Aston Martin until the dawn of the new F1 era in 2026. As the F1 fraternity awaits the forthcoming changes, all eyes will be on how the team, and especially Stroll, utilize Newey’s expertise to their advantage.
