In a surprising and headline-grabbing statement, former Renault F1 boss Flavio Briatore has thrown his support behind Oscar Piastri, claiming the young Alpine talent is set to surpass Pierre Gasly in performance as the 2025 Formula 1 season progresses.

Briatore, never shy with his opinions, described Piastri as “a star in the making” and suggested that the Australian’s trajectory will soon eclipse that of the more experienced AlphaTauri driver. The comments have sparked intense debate within the paddock, as both drivers navigate pivotal stages in their careers.

🚥 Piastri under the spotlight

While Briatore’s comments came as a shock to some, they underline the high expectations placed on Piastri since his meteoric rise through the junior ranks. After an impressive debut year with McLaren in 2023, followed by his controversial departure from Alpine, Piastri now finds himself back with the Enstone squad under an unusual arrangement, and his return has been anything but smooth.

Struggling with consistency and race pace early in the 2025 season, Piastri is still searching for the form that once made him the most talked-about rookie in the sport. Now, with Briatore publicly backing him, the pressure has only increased.

“Oscar has the talent, the calm under pressure, and the intelligence needed to be a top driver in Formula 1,” Briatore said. “He just needs the right tools and the right moment—he’ll beat Gasly, I’m sure of it.”

🔧 Gasly holding steady at AlphaTauri

Meanwhile, Pierre Gasly has been quietly getting the job done at AlphaTauri (now Racing Bulls), delivering consistent performances and scoring points despite the team’s fluctuating pace. With his future in F1 still undecided, Gasly has every reason to hold off the rising stars vying for his seat or reputation.

His head-to-head battle with Piastri, while not direct in team terms, is becoming a key narrative in the midfield as Alpine and AlphaTauri battle for pride and performance.

⚖️ Can Piastri rise to the occasion?

The verdict is still out. Briatore’s endorsement is a significant vote of confidence, but it also comes with intense scrutiny. Piastri must now deliver performances that back up the hype—not just in qualifying, but over race distances where he’s struggled with tire wear and setup adaptation.

With races like Monaco and Montreal ahead—circuits that reward precision and mental resilience—Piastri has the chance to prove Briatore right and reignite his momentum in F1.

🏁 The battle is on

As the 2025 F1 season intensifies, the Piastri vs. Gasly comparison will be watched closely. Is this the beginning of a breakout campaign for the Australian? Or will Gasly’s experience continue to edge out the rising star?

For now, Briatore has spoken. It’s up to Piastri to make his words ring true on the track.
