“The pressure during race weekends is somewhat similar. The focus is on performing, with little room for error. However, my weekends are now divided and I find myself dealing with engineering and commercial issues. I have to adapt and shift gears mentally,” explained Komatsu.
“I was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming support I received. The racing team is based in the UK, with car design happening in Italy. Although I am based in the UK, I receive ample support from Italy. Working with these people has been a delightful surprise,” admitted 48-year-old Komatsu.
Amidst a pre-season full of significant F1 news, Steiner’s sudden departure from the team just before testing sent shockwaves through the paddock. It was an unexpected twist, considering Steiner’s overnight fame through his Netflix portrayal as the face and voice of the team. However, it became clear that Gene Haas was tired of ‘The Guenther Show’ and subsequently promoted Komatsu to the position.
The Tokyo native shed light on the clear instructions he received from his American boss, stating: “Gene’s message was crystal clear. He was unhappy with the team’s performance. It’s quite simple, really. Every race weekend, you strive to stand out in each session, with every lap counting.”
“There is no room for errors. You must contemplate how to improve and approach each session strategically. The pressure is internal, driven by the pursuit of perfection,” elaborated Komatsu. “Each person has their own unique personality, and my goal is to extract the best performance from each individual. Understanding their strengths and adapting to different situations is crucial to building a successful strategy,” ventured Komatsu.

Nico, as usual, delivered exceptional laps during Q1 and Q2. Overall, Komatsu viewed the team’s recovery from challenging practice sessions positively, recognizing the effective collaboration of the team.
