The European Parliament (EP) wants serious traffic offenses, such as driving under the influence of alcohol, to result in a driving ban throughout the European Union (EU).
In a text approved this Tuesday, by 372 votes in favor, 220 against, and 43 abstentions, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) approved their negotiating position, with negotiations with the Council of the EU (Member States) on this Commission proposal postponed until after the European elections in June.
In the text, MEPs also propose that serious offenses, such as driving without a valid driver’s license, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and speeding, result in a driving ban not only in the Member State where they were committed but also in the other 26 states.
It should be noted that the European Commission presented a package of measures on road safety in March 2023, aiming to improve the safety of all road users and approach as closely as possible to zero fatalities and zero serious injuries on EU roads by 2050.
