Lando Norris, a British driver, competed in the Formula 1 World Championship Canadian Grand Prix. On race day, McLaren team boss Andrea Stella explained how the team’s fast pace in mixed conditions was not hindered by pressure from other drivers.

Initially, Norris was behind George Russell and Max Verstappen by approximately eight seconds. However, he quickly caught up to them and overtook them in consecutive laps.

While Norris extended his lead, his teammate Oscar Piastri was also closing in on Russell and Verstappen. Stella revealed that McLaren’s comfortable advantage over the cars behind allowed both drivers to preserve their intermediate tires better than their competitors.

Stella clarified that this decision was not based on tactical competition, but rather on the impending rain that was forecasted. They knew it would be challenging for the intermediate tires to last until the expected rain around lap 30.

“We started saving the tires very early, even when it wasn’t necessary, to find the cool or wet areas of the track. This ensured that the tires remained in good condition when the track became more challenging,” Stella explained.

He emphasized that there was no secret strategy, but rather the team’s favorable position in the first stint that allowed them to implement this tire-saving approach without negative consequences, as they were not under pressure from behind.

A McLaren wasted its first place position when Logan Sargeant’s Williams stopped, causing a Safety Car period. Norris, who was not instructed to enter the pits on that specific lap, fell behind the cars that took advantage of the situation and switched to a second set of intermediate tires. Norris, on the other hand, followed the safety car and emerged in third place after his pit stop.

Despite Norris’ claim that McLaren lost a potential victory, Stella believes that Mercedes’ later pace in dry conditions would have made it difficult to achieve. When asked if there were other reasons why Norris couldn’t beat Verstappen, Stella replied, “Not later in the race. I think later in the race, things unfolded… Mercedes should have finished ahead of Lando. So if there was anything, we maximized the opportunities after the Safety Car. Without the Safety Car, Lando could have built a significant advantage to try to finish the race on dry tires.”

Stella suggested that even if an untimely Safety Car hadn’t diminished Norris’ lead, Mercedes still had the speed to catch up with him. “I think Mercedes could have caught up because they were a few tenths of a second faster than us,” she reiterated. “We needed a significant advantage to safely reach the end. However, this is somewhat hypothetical because in a race like this, with two or three safety cars, you have to assume they will happen, and the weather was also a factor. We knew it would be a race determined by various scenarios, and in the end, we are satisfied with the results.”
