Norris, who was not instructed to enter the pits on that specific lap, fell behind the cars that took advantage of the situation and switched to a second set of intermediate tires. Despite Norris’ claim that McLaren lost a potential victory, Stella believes that Mercedes’ later pace in dry conditions would have made it difficult to achieve. When asked if there were other reasons why Norris couldn’t beat Verstappen, Stella replied, “Not later in the race. I think later in the race, things unfolded… Mercedes should have finished ahead of Lando. So if there was anything, we maximized the opportunities after the Safety Car. Without the Safety Car, Lando could have built a significant advantage to try to finish the race on dry tires.”
Stella suggested that even if an untimely Safety Car hadn’t diminished Norris’ lead, Mercedes still had the speed to catch up with him. “I think Mercedes could have caught up because they were a few tenths of a second faster than us,” she reiterated. “We needed a significant advantage to safely reach the end. However, this is somewhat hypothetical because in a race like this, with two or three safety cars, you have to assume they will happen, and the weather was also a factor. We knew it would be a race determined by various scenarios, and in the end, we are satisfied with the results.”
