Erik Comas’ legendary Renault 5 Turbo set for auction: can it fetch £250,000?

Get Ready for the Auction of a Lifetime: Erik Comas’ Historic Renault 5 Turbo Could Fetch Up to £250,000!

Attention all motorsport enthusiasts and collectors! An iconic piece of racing history is set to hit the auction block next month at the highly anticipated Race Retro competition car sale. Up for grabs is the legendary 1987 Renault 5 Turbo ‘Superproduction’ driven by none other than Erik Comas, a name synonymous with both triumph and drama in the world of motorsport. This extraordinary vehicle is expected to command a staggering estimate of between £200,000 and £250,000!

Erik Comas, who made his mark in Formula 1 with the Ligier team before moving to Larrousse, is no stranger to the limelight, despite his modest point tally of just seven during his F1 career. His name resonates with fans due to a dramatic moment in racing history, where the late Ayrton Senna heroically rescued him after a devastating crash at Blanchimont during the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix. However, before his foray into the F1 arena, Comas had already carved a niche for himself in touring car racing, clinching the championship in 1987 behind the wheel of this very Renault.

This spectacular Renault, with chassis number Ch 3-86, is one of only three factory ‘Superproduction’ units built for the French Supertouring series in the mid-1980s. Drenched in its original Philips blue and red livery, this car is not just a collector’s item; it’s a piece of racing heritage. The Renault was engineered with Matter rollcages and Sonica chassis development, boasting a lower ride height, a wider track, and superior suspension for an exhilarating drive. Under the hood, a potent 1419cc engine package from Sodemo Moteurs, complemented by a Garrett T4/T3 turbo, unleashes a jaw-dropping 410 horsepower at an exhilarating 3.2 bar of boost!

This remarkable vehicle was last serviced in 2020 and has participated in public demonstration runs, proving it remains a formidable contender on the track. Joining the Renault 5 Turbo in this auction lineup is a genuine 1984 Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, valued between £175,000 and £200,000, and a 1987 DAM 4100 Metro 6R4, estimated at £100,000-£120,000. The Maxi Turbo boasts a rich history, closely connected to British driver John Price, while the Metro 6R4, meticulously maintained over the years, was built by David Appleby.

Rob Hubbard, the managing director and principal auctioneer of Iconic Auctioneers, expressed his excitement about this monumental sale: “Race Retro is the natural home for cars like these. The Erik Comas Renault 5 Turbo ‘Superproduction’ is a landmark touring car, and offering it alongside a Maxi Turbo linked to John Price and a Metro 6R4 from Tony Pond’s era showcases the depth of this sale. It highlights our expertise as specialists in competition cars at every level of the market.”

Mark your calendars! Bidding will take place during the exhilarating Race Retro weekend at Stoneleigh Park on February 20. Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of racing history that embodies the spirit of competition and the thrill of the track!
