Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is set to undergo surgery on his left meniscus, according to an official from the team. The exact timeline for his recovery will be determined after the procedure, but it is expected that Embiid will be out for a significant amount of time.
The incident occurred during Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors when Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga fell on Embiid’s leg in the late stages of the fourth quarter. Prior to this game, Embiid had already missed two consecutive contests due to knee soreness.
This will be the second time that the 29-year-old undergoes surgery on his left meniscus. The first surgery took place in 2017, where he underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove a small portion of the meniscus in his knee.
Embiid has been having an outstanding season, averaging 35 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in 34 games. However, with this upcoming surgery, it is likely that he will fall short of the 65-game threshold required to be eligible for awards like the MVP trophy.
The Philadelphia 76ers have struggled in Embiid’s absence this season, winning only four out of 14 games without their superstar. Currently, they hold the fifth position in the Eastern Conference with a record of 30-18.
