Electric vehicle market falls 6.8% in May

The Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) revealed that in May, 3147 new 100% electric passenger cars were registered. This represents a 6.8% decrease compared to the same month in 2023.

Overall, in the first five months of 2024, there was an 11.7% increase in new electric passenger cars compared to the same period last year, with 15,394 units registered.

ACAP also revealed that in May, 9,054 new electrified passenger cars were registered in Portugal, including electric, plug-in, and hybrid electric vehicles, which is a 9.1% increase compared to the same month last year.

From January to May 2024, the registrations of this type of passenger cars totaled 42,892 units, representing a positive variation of 14.8% compared to the same period last year.

As for the market of electric, plug-in, and hybrid electric light commercial vehicles, there was a negative evolution of 33.7% in the fifth month of 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, with 118 units registered. In total, this market reached 1094 units, representing an 18.9% growth compared to 2023.

It is also worth noting the market of 100% electric light commercial vehicles, which saw a 33.7% decrease in May compared to the same month last year. However, in the first five months of 2024, there was an 18.7% growth compared to the same period last year.

Regarding the heavy vehicles market, which includes both passenger and freight types, in May, 11 new electrified heavy vehicles were registered, representing a decrease of 66.7%.

In cumulative terms, from January to May 2024, there was a negative evolution of 59.4% compared to the same period last year with 43 vehicles registered.
