Las Vegas Jackpot: Mercedes’ Dominant 1-2 Sparks Questions for 2025 Championship Aspirations

The ground-effect era of Formula 1 has been a brutal wake-up call for Mercedes, but one man has quietly risen above the chaos—George Russell. The 26-year-old Brit has not only held his own against seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton but, according to former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan, he has outright beaten him.

With Hamilton now departing for Ferrari, the torch is officially in Russell’s hands. But does he have what it takes to carry Mercedes back to championship glory?

Russell vs. Hamilton: The Changing of the Guard

When George Russell joined Mercedes in 2022, he was expected to play the role of Hamilton’s apprentice. Instead, he’s proven to be the Silver Arrows’ most consistent performer in an era where the team has struggled to adapt.

Eddie Jordan believes the reason is simple: Russell was willing to adapt, Hamilton was not.

“At the end of the day, George Russell grabbed that car by the horns and made it do different things to what Lewis was. Lewis has been driving since he was five, seven, or eight years of age, so he’s not going to drive something that is not up to his liking.”

While Hamilton grew frustrated with the unpredictable W14 and W15, Russell worked around the car’s flaws.

The stats back it up:

🔹 Russell outqualified Hamilton 19 times in 2024
🔹 Hamilton only outqualified Russell 5 times
🔹 Russell often had better race pace, forcing Hamilton into damage control

Jordan didn’t mince words about Russell’s dominance in one-lap performance:

“George absolutely demolished him (Hamilton) in qualifying and to some extent in the races as well. So well done, George Russell.”

What’s Next for Russell? Leading Mercedes in a New Era

Now that Hamilton is gone, Russell must prove he’s more than just a quick driver—he must become a leader.

For 2025, Russell is paired with 18-year-old sensation Kimi Antonelli, an F1 rookie stepping directly into one of the sport’s most legendary teams. With Mercedes in rebuilding mode, all eyes are on Russell to take charge and guide the team forward.

🚨 Russell’s Biggest Challenges in 2025:
✅ Can he develop the car better than Hamilton did?
✅ Can he handle the pressure of being Mercedes’ No.1 driver?
✅ Can he keep Antonelli at bay and prevent a power struggle?

With Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Charles Leclerc all in top machinery, Russell must prove he belongs among F1’s elite—not just as Hamilton’s successor, but as Mercedes’ new championship hope.

Will Russell Thrive as Mercedes’ New Leader?

With Hamilton gone and Mercedes searching for its next chapter, George Russell’s moment has arrived.

He has already beaten a legend—but can he become one himself?
