Until the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League

While Charles Leclerc finally achieved the victory he had long desired at the Monaco Grand Prix, many other Formula 1 drivers had frustrating Sundays on the city streets. However, who is to blame for their disappointing performances? Here is Edd Straw’s assessment of the field.

How do the rankings work? The 20 drivers will be ranked based on their performance during each Grand Prix weekend, considering various criteria such as pace, racecraft, consistency, and avoiding critical errors. How much each driver maximizes the performance potential of their car will be a crucial factor in the rankings.

It is important to note that these rankings reflect performance throughout the weekend, recognizing that qualifying sets the foundation for the race. These rankings are not a measure of each driver’s overall qualities, but rather an assessment of their performance in a specific weekend. Therefore, rankings will vary significantly from one weekend to another.

Furthermore, since each of the 10 teams has a different car performance potential and luck plays a role in the weekend’s outcome, these rankings will differ from the overall results.

Race analysis:

Charles Leclerc:

Leclerc dominated his home Grand Prix from start to finish, securing pole position and controlling the race to claim a famous victory. His performance was flawless.

Alex Albon:

Albon made the most of a well-balanced car, qualifying in Q3 and executing a race without errors to score valuable points. His performance was smooth, but executed excellently.

Yuki Tsunoda:

Tsunoda had aspirations of a better result in qualifying, but settled for eighth place, which seemed to be the maximum potential of his car. He showed consistent and error-free driving throughout the weekend.

Oscar Piastri:

Piastri took his confidence from Imola to Monaco, showing impressive commitment and pace. Although faster than his McLaren rivals, he narrowly missed out on pole position. Despite damage during the race, he managed to secure a good result. Excellent performance, but pole position was within reach.

George Russell:

Russell was slightly disappointed with his qualifying result, but still managed a solid fifth place on the grid. Due to tire strategy, he had a relatively quiet race, but defended his position against Max Verstappen. A weekend executed efficiently.

Lewis Hamilton:

Hamilton chose not to use the new Mercedes front wing and qualified behind his teammate, Russell. He spent the race chasing Verstappen, but missed opportunities to gain positions. Performance level similar to Russell considering the difference in car specifications.

Pierre Gasly:

Gasly faced initial setbacks in practice, but recovered well. He outperformed his teammate in qualifying and had a smooth race, earning his first point of the year. His strongest weekend so far.

Carlos Sainz:

Sainz struggled to match the confidence of his Ferrari teammate, resulting in a consistent performance gap between them. He was fortunate to restart in his original third position, but suffered a tire puncture due to contact with another car. Good performance, but not at Leclerc’s level.

Lando Norris:

Norris had a solid weekend, but couldn’t keep up with his teammate Piastri’s performance. He ended up behind the Ferrari-McLaren group both in qualifying and in the race. Piastri extracted more from the car.

Max Verstappen:

Verstappen dealt with suspension issues in his Red Bull car, but made a mistake in qualifying that compromised his result. This was Red Bull’s worst weekend of the year, and Verstappen couldn’t deliver his best performance. A small mistake in qualifying cost him several positions in the race.

Fernando Alonso:

Alonso’s weekend was ruined by traffic in qualifying, which prevented him from advancing to Q2. He had to restart with different tires and spent most of the race defending himself from the cars behind him. Opportunity limited by an early exit in qualifying.

Nico Hulkenberg:

Hulkenberg did well in qualifying, but was disqualified along with his teammate. His race was interrupted due to an incident caused by other drivers. Showed good pace, but had bad luck on Sunday.

Logan Sargeant:

Sargeant struggled in qualifying due to car limitations, but had a solid race despite having to make a pit stop. Better performance than it seems on paper.

Daniel Ricciardo:

Ricciardo couldn’t find the necessary pace in qualifying and stayed behind Alonso throughout the race. Decent performance, but without the previous shine of Monaco.

Valtteri Bottas:

Bottas made the most of his limited machine compared to his teammate, but lacked competitiveness. He finished in 13th place. Didn’t have the machine to impress.

Lance Stroll:

Stroll outperformed his teammate in qualifying, but made a mistake during the race, resulting in a tire puncture. A mistake on Sunday ruined a solid weekend.

Zhou Guanyu:

Zhou struggled with confidence in the brakes in qualifying and ended up at the back of the pack. He had more difficulties than his teammate.

Esteban Ocon:

Ocon showed promising pace throughout the weekend, but missed out on Q3 and had a collision with his teammate during the race. A missed opportunity in both qualifying and the race.

Sergio Perez:

Perez fell victim to traffic in qualifying and made contact with another car, resulting in his elimination in Q1. He could have avoided the contact and had an unlucky race. A mix of misfortune and underperformance.

Kevin Magnussen:

Magnussen had good pace, but couldn’t improve in Q2 due to a misunderstanding with the team. He took risks during the race, which resulted in a collision. Fast, but didn’t make the best decisions.
