Former Formula 1 bigwig Bernie Ecclestone is not holding back in his criticism of Max Verstappen’s actions during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The race, which was filled with controversy, saw Verstappen receive a penalty for leaving the track to gain an advantage over his competitor, Oscar Piastri.

Ecclestone has raised a burning question that many fans have been pondering: Why didn’t Verstappen simply give the position back to Piastri to avoid the penalty altogether? The seasoned racing figure emphasizes that relinquishing the position could have saved Verstappen from the five-second penalty that ultimately cost him the victory.

The intense battle between Verstappen and Piastri started from the get-go, with both drivers fiercely vying for the lead. Verstappen managed to edge ahead at Turn 1, but Piastri retaliated at Turn 2, leading to a contentious moment where Verstappen cut the corner to stay in front.

Despite crossing the finish line in second place, the penalty imposed on Verstappen proved pivotal, as it prevented him from claiming the top spot on the podium. The narrow gap of 2.8 seconds between him and Piastri highlighted the significance of the penalty in the final outcome of the race.

In the aftermath of the event, Ecclestone didn’t mince words, questioning Verstappen’s decision-making on the track. He pointed out that returning the position to Piastri immediately after the incident could have been a game-changer for the Dutch driver.

Red Bull’s senior advisor, Helmut Marko, revealed that there were discussions about giving back the position during the race but decided to do so during the pit stop after the penalty was issued. The timing of the penalty, coupled with subsequent race incidents, left Verstappen with little opportunity to rectify the situation.

The unfolding of events in Saudi Arabia Grand Prix underscored the fine margins in Formula 1 racing and the strategic decisions that can make or break a driver’s performance. As the dust settles on this contentious race, the spotlight remains on Verstappen’s penalty and the implications it had on the final results.
