Disastrous Singapore Race: Sauber’s Bortoleto and Hülkenberg Suffer Double Zero in Crushing Defeat

Disaster Strikes for Sauber in Singapore: A Race to Forget for Bortoleto and Hülkenberg!

The Singapore Grand Prix has proven to be a catastrophic chapter for Sauber, as the team grappled with dismal performances that could have devastating implications for their standing in the Constructors’ Championship. Amidst the celebrations of McLaren’s world title victory, the Swiss team found themselves spiraling further away from Aston Martin, watching their hopes dim as Fernando Alonso’s seventh-place finish left them vulnerable. With Haas breathing down their necks, the pressure is mounting as they now cling to a precarious eight-point lead.

The race began with chaos, as Gabriel Bortoleto’s day was derailed before it even started. A collision at the start forced the Brazilian driver to pit for a front wing replacement, crushing any chance of a comeback. Bortoleto, reflecting on his harrowing experience, lamented, “It was certainly not our best race. I sustained some damage on the first lap after a contact in Turn One. We went wide three times, and unfortunately, we touched and broke the front wing. This cost us a lot of time, and from that moment on, the race was always going to be difficult.” He finished in a disappointing 17th place, admitting the track’s challenge made overtaking nearly impossible. “Overall, it was just one of those days where things didn’t go as we wanted. However, we will focus on the positives from the weekend, learn what we can, and move forward.”

Adding to the team’s woes, Nico Hülkenberg faced a nightmare scenario, finishing dead last after spinning out during the race. “It wasn’t our day,” he stated bluntly. The German driver highlighted the difficulty of racing in a tight street circuit where overtaking opportunities are scarce unless one has a significant tire advantage. “In the end, when I was closing in on Colapinto, he braked surprisingly early, and I lost a lot of rear grip, which led to a big lock-up and the spin.” Hülkenberg emphasized the need for a strategic overhaul, acknowledging their performance was well below par throughout the weekend. “Yet, even in such tough days, there’s always something to learn and carry forward into the next races.”

Sauber’s back-to-back zero points, compounded by their struggles in Baku, has raised alarms about their competitiveness moving forward. As the team continues to grapple with the ramifications of this disastrous outing, the resolve to bounce back remains strong. The question looms: can Sauber regroup and reclaim their footing in the fierce battle for points in the upcoming races? Only time will tell if they can turn their fortunes around and avoid sinking deeper into the standings pit.
