VIDEO – Alpine’s Franco Colapinto survives heart-stopping crash, triggering red flags at F1 Imola GP

Pasticcio Colapinto: A Catastrophic Start in F1 with Alpine and a Sharp Jab from Mick Doohan

The Argentine driver’s second Formula 1 adventure has kicked off on the wrong foot, as he replaces Jack Doohan at the wheel of Alpine. Flavio Briatore’s instructions to Franco Colapinto were crystal clear: be fast, score points, and above all, do not destroy the car in an accident. However, the young Argentine talent seemed to have overlooked Briatore’s advice, as he ended up doing exactly what he was told to avoid during Q1 of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix – landing in the gravel with a wrecked car.

During the first qualifying session, Colapinto lost control of his single-seater coming out of the Tamburello chicane, skidding into the gravel and then hitting the barriers quite heavily. This mistake abruptly ended the Argentine’s Saturday, who immediately apologized to the team over the radio. Undoubtedly, this incident did not bring smiles to the Enstone team management. Despite the crash, Colapinto had managed to qualify for Q2, which he, unfortunately, could not participate in.

Just hours before the qualifying session, the idol of Argentine fans had to endure a rather sharp comment from Jack Doohan’s father, the motorcycle racing legend Mick. Speaking to the Spanish channel DAZN, Mick Doohan referred to Alpine as a “team of paying drivers,” insinuating that Colapinto was chosen over Doohan junior not for his talent but rather for the money he brought in through sponsors.

The debut of Franco Colapinto in Formula 1 has been marred by a series of unfortunate events, raising questions about his readiness for the elite motorsport competition. As he navigates through these early challenges, Colapinto will need to demonstrate resilience and skill to prove his worth in the highly competitive world of Formula 1. Mick Doohan’s comments have added another layer of complexity to the situation, hinting at underlying tensions within the Alpine team. The upcoming races will undoubtedly be crucial for Colapinto to redeem himself and showcase his true potential on the track.
