Dino Beganovic clinches thrilling first pole of 2026 F2 season in Australia showdown

Dino Beganovic Dominates with First Pole of 2026 F2 Season in Thrilling Australian Qualifying Showdown

In a breathtaking display of speed and skill, Dino Beganovic clinched the coveted first pole position of the 2026 Formula 2 season during a gripping qualifying session in Australia. The young driver’s stellar lap time has set the stage for an intense Feature Race, with Martinius Stenshorne right behind him, completing an electrifying front row.

The day kicked off with a tumultuous practice session where Gabriele Mini emerged as the surprising frontrunner, clocking an impressive time while his competitors struggled to find their footing. In stark contrast, Colton Herta's day took a turn for the worse as he spun out and collided with the wall, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

As the sun blazed down on the circuit, 22 eager drivers lined up in the pit lane, ready to unleash their fury on the asphalt for the highly anticipated qualifying session. Just like in the earlier Formula 3 races, every millisecond mattered, and the drivers wasted no time in storming onto the track.

Mini was the first to make his mark, easing into a push lap and setting a time of 1:32.199s. However, it was Beganovic who truly stole the show, blazing past the competition with a jaw-dropping 1:29.953s, becoming the first to break into the 1:29s. The pressure intensified as the Invita Racing duo of Stenshorne and Nikola Tsolov surged, with Tsolov briefly claiming the top spot with a blistering lap of 1:29.381.

Just as the excitement peaked, a Red Flag brought the session to a halt when Mari Boya skidded through the gravel and crashed into the wall, leaving fans gasping. However, after a brief pause, the session resumed, but not without drama. Mini’s Alpine-liveried MP car showed signs of trouble, as mechanics scrambled to fix a crucial engine issue with only 15 minutes left on the clock.

With time slipping away, the remaining drivers made a mad dash onto the track, only to be met with another yellow flag as Mini's car came to a standstill shortly after exiting the pits—an alarming sight for the Italian racer.

As the clock ticked down to five minutes, the tension in the air was palpable. The remaining drivers launched into their final attempts, racing against time in a desperate bid to secure the pole position. In a thrilling one-lap shoot-out, Alex Dunne and Stenshorne battled fiercely, but it was Beganovic who ultimately emerged victorious, shattering the competition with an unbeatable time of 1:28.695s.

The grid was set, with Beganovic leading the pack into the Feature Race. Stenshorne and Tsolov rounded out the top three, while Noel Leon secured a strong fourth place. Behind them, F3 rivals Rafael Camara and Nikola Tsolov prepared to battle it out from the third row. Kush Maini and Oliver Goethe, along with Joshua Durksen and Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak, filled the remaining spots in the top ten, with Inthraphuvasak also taking pole for the Sprint Race due to the reverse grid.

As the 2026 season kicks off with such a thrilling start, all eyes will be on Beganovic as he aims to maintain his momentum in the upcoming races. This electrifying qualifying session has set the tone for what promises to be a nail-biting season in Formula 2. Hold onto your seats—this is just the beginning!
