Did Marcus Ericsson Choke at the Indy 500? Pato O’Ward’s Explosive Accusation Unveiled

Arrow McLaren driver Pato O'Ward (5) watches sky divers Sunday, May 25, 2025, ahead of the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In a thrilling Indy 500 showdown, Pato O’Ward unleashes a storm of accusations against Marcus Ericsson, claiming the Swedish driver “choked” and cost him victory at the iconic race.

O’Ward, starting from the front row in his No. 5 Arrow McLaren, had high hopes of clinching the Borg-Warner Trophy but had to settle for fourth place. The Mexican driver watched in frustration as Alex Palou overtook Ericsson with 14 laps remaining, a move that ultimately secured Palou’s victory in the race.

While Ericsson explained his perspective, admitting he struggled in the dirty air and second-guessing his actions during the crucial moment, O’Ward was quick to criticize Ericsson’s performance. He suggested that Ericsson could have taken different actions to prevent Palou from seizing the lead, providing the fans with a more intense finish.

Expressing his disappointment with the overall racing quality at the Indy 500, O’Ward labeled the event as “pathetic” and below the expected standards. He criticized the inexperienced drivers at the front during restarts, likening the situation to playing roulette in a casino where outcomes were determined by luck rather than skill.

Despite his frustration, O’Ward managed to secure a respectable fourth-place finish, marking his fifth top-six finish in six appearances at the prestigious event. However, the coveted victory at the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” continues to elude him.

O’Ward’s fiery accusations and discontent add a layer of drama to an already intense Indy 500, setting the stage for further rivalries and showdowns in the upcoming races of the season.
