The first race of the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season is set for this Saturday, April 20, and the event started with two practice sessions. Sebastien Bourdais, in the Chip Ganassi Cadillac #01, took third place with a time of 1.13.531, despite completing only nine laps, which was significantly less than his competitors. Nick Tandy secured fourth place for the Porsche Penske 963 #6, with a lap time of 1:14.056, aiming to replicate his victory in last year’s race alongside teammate Mathieu Jaminet. Phillip Eng closed out the top five in the GTP category, driving the BMW RLL #24 and achieving a time of 1:14.213. In the GTD category, the AWA Corvette Z06 GT3.R was the fastest car in the grid of 17 cars, with Matt Bell clocking a time of 1:18.911 in his Corvette #13 after completing 29 laps. Parker Thompson of Vasser Sullivan secured second place in the Lexus RC F GT3 #89, with a time of 1:19.055. The Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 #45, driven by Kyle Marcelli, took third place with a time of 1:19.150. Jack Hawksworth, the current GTD Pro champion, placed fourth in the Vasser Sullivan Lexus #89, with a time of 1:19.153, as he prepares to compete in the GTD category this weekend. Inception Racing rounded out the top five in GTD with their McLaren 720S GT3 EVO #70, driven by Frederik Schandorff, achieving a time of 1:19.198. The action will continue with Free Practice 2, a 1 hour and 30-minute session, scheduled for later at 8:50 PM UK time.
