In the world of NASCAR, it’s survival of the fittest as drivers vie for the spotlight and strive to maintain their edge. The winds of change seem to be blowing at Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), with iconic driver Denny Hamlin slowly but surely fading into the background. With his 21st season in the Cup Series underway, some are questioning his future at JGR as the team refocuses its energies on younger prospects.

Hamlin, a Florida native with no familial ties to NASCAR, broke into the industry through sheer talent and grit. His journey began in 2005 when JGR president J.D. Gibbs took a chance on him, giving him a shot at five trucks and one Xfinity race. The following year, Hamlin clinched his first win at the Pocono 500, kickstarting a fruitful relationship with JGR that spans over two decades and boasts 54 wins.

There’s no denying Hamlin’s prowess on the track. His three Daytona 500 victories (2016, 2019, 2020), along with numerous other accolades, cement his place in NASCAR’s Hall of Fame. However, despite his consistent performance and ability to regularly make the playoffs, Hamlin has yet to secure a championship title. With each passing year, the elusive championship seems to be drifting further out of reach.

Meanwhile, the rising star of Christopher Bell is casting a shadow over Hamlin’s reign at JGR. With a track record of multiple victories each year and a knack for mastering the next-gen car, Bell has been earmarked by Coach Gibbs as a potential championship-winning driver. This is a role Hamlin once confidently held, but as he turns 45 this year and with a championship still eluding him, Hamlin’s star seems to be dimming.

The veteran driver’s fortunes have been further strained by some recent changes. The loss of longtime partner FedEx and the departure of Chris Gabehart, with Chris Gayle stepping in, has seemingly disrupted the #11 team’s balance. Such disturbances might prove challenging for Hamlin to adapt to, particularly at this critical juncture in his career when he’s determined to win that elusive championship.

Kevin Harvick, a fellow NASCAR heavyweight, recently voiced his thoughts on the situation at JGR. He acknowledged Hamlin’s expertise and leadership qualities but highlighted the uncertainty that comes with change. Harvick pointed out the continuity within the #20 team, hinting that this could be a decisive factor in Bell’s success.

Indeed, Bell’s adaptability and consistency are propelling him to new heights. After impressing in Late Models, he secured a Truck ride with Kyle Busch Motorsports and delivered a championship in 2017. His move to Xfinity with JGR saw him transform the #20 car into a winning machine. With his team’s composition remaining constant, Bell’s dominance on the track seems set to continue.

Already four races into the season, Bell has claimed two victories (Atlanta, COTA). His versatility as a dirt track racer, coupled with his success in NASCAR and other racing events, underscore his potential as a championship contender. The racing community has also recognized Bell’s potential, selecting him for the newly formed playoff committee.

With his contract due to expire in 2025, it remains to be seen whether Hamlin will continue his journey with JGR or venture into new territories. While Hamlin’s future hangs in the balance, Christopher Bell appears to be the future of JGR, strengthening his position with each race.

What are your thoughts on Christopher Bell’s chances of winning the championship this year? Let us know in the comments below!
