Denny Hamlin Snatches Victory in Overtime at Darlington for Back-to-Back Wins

Denny Hamlin delivered an incredible overtime performance at Darlington Raceway, capturing his second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victory after a flawless pit stop under yellow. With his 56th career win, Hamlin took the lead in the final laps of the green-white-checkered finish, securing a dramatic win by 0.597 seconds.

William Byron, who led the race from start to nearly finish, was forced to settle for second after a mishap during his final pit stop cost him the lead. Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, and Ryan Blaney rounded out the top five in a race full of strategic plays and dramatic turns.

With just a handful of laps remaining, it appeared Blaney had finally seized control of the race, passing Reddick to take the lead. However, the caution flag flew due to Kyle Larson spinning out, with a little help from Bubba Wallace, which set up a chaotic restart and the overtime shootout.

Hamlin, who was running fifth when the caution came out, capitalized on a lightning-fast four-tire stop from his pit crew, rocketing to the front of the pack. In the two-lap shootout that followed, he managed to maintain his lead over Reddick and Byron, clinching the win in his No. 11 Toyota.

“I have two people I really love right now—my pit crew and Kyle Larson,” Hamlin said post-race. “The pit crew did an amazing job. They were on it last week. They were on it this week. It’s all about them.”

The race had been largely dominated by Byron, who led the first 243 laps, including both stages, and appeared poised for victory. But after a strategic misstep on the final pit stop, Byron found himself in third place when the field went green again. Despite his disappointment, he was proud of his team’s performance.

“Just really proud of my team,” Byron said. “To bring that level of effort and preparation, we were looking like we were going to lead every lap. It stings in the moment for sure.”

Blaney, who had been in a strong position to claim his first win of the season, was frustrated by the timing of the caution. “I thought we had the race won,” Blaney said with a laugh, acknowledging how close he came to breaking through for the win.

The race, which started with a dominant performance from Byron, ended in an overtime thriller that will be remembered for Hamlin’s pit crew’s performance and the chaos triggered by the caution. Hamlin’s victory gives him back-to-back wins, and it moves him up to 11th on the all-time NASCAR win list.

The series heads to Bristol Motor Speedway next Sunday for another thrilling race.
