In an extraordinary turn of events at the Darlington Spring race, Denny Hamlin secured a dramatic back-to-back victory, thanks to a flawless pit stop and a timely caution that turned the race upside down. What appeared to be a near-certain win for William Byron quickly slipped through his fingers, as the twists of fate and a green-white-checkered finish handed Hamlin his second victory of the 2025 season.

With just 50 laps to go, it seemed like Byron was on track to dominate, having led every lap up until that point. However, the complexion of the race changed with 49 laps remaining when a caution for Kyle Larson spinning in turn two brought the field to a halt. Larson’s second spin of the race set the stage for a nail-biting finish, leaving the drivers with one final chance to make their move in the ensuing restart.

Before the caution, Ryan Blaney was closing in on Tyler Reddick for the lead. In an aggressive attempt to hold him off, Reddick made contact with the wall, damaging his car enough to make the green-white-checkered restart a challenge. Reddick, frustrated but focused, quickly apologized to his team, only to receive a reassuring response from his spotter, who reminded him, “We have a lot to fight for.”

As the field returned to the pits under caution, Hamlin, who had been running fifth, found himself in the perfect position to capitalize. His pit crew delivered the fastest four-tire stop of the day, propelling him to the front of the field and setting him up for a shot at victory.

“I have two people I really love right now—my pit crew and Kyle Larson,” Hamlin joked after the race, acknowledging the crucial role his team and Larson’s misfortune played in his triumph.

Byron, who had dominated the race, was left to settle for second place, visibly disappointed but proud of the effort from his Hendrick Motorsports team. Christopher Bell, who had been shadowing the front-runners, managed to maneuver past both Reddick and Blaney, securing a well-earned third place. Blaney, who had looked set to claim his first-ever Darlington win, came home in fourth, with Reddick rounding out the top five.

In the end, it was Hamlin’s strategic pit stop and a little help from Larson’s spin that made all the difference, as the veteran driver grabbed another signature victory at one of NASCAR’s most challenging tracks.
