As the curtain closed on Martin Truex Jr.’s legendary NASCAR career, the tributes from fans and fellow drivers alike painted a vivid picture of a champion whose impact extended well beyond the racetrack. Truex Jr., the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion, bid farewell to full-time racing at Phoenix Raceway, bringing an end to an era defined by professionalism, consistency, and a relentless drive to excel.

Among those paying heartfelt tribute was longtime Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammate Denny Hamlin, who praised Truex Jr. not just as a competitor but as a role model and friend.

“A Constant Professional” – Hamlin on Truex’s Influence

Hamlin, who shared countless battles and podiums with Truex during their time together at JGR, expressed admiration for his teammate’s approach both on and off the track.

“What can I say about Truex? Just a constant professional as a teammate. Certainly, somebody that I admire off the racetrack, as well. His — how independent he is. He’s independent off the racetrack, and just a great professional on the racetrack.”

The No. 11 Toyota driver highlighted Truex’s unique blend of independence and professionalism, traits that set him apart in a sport where teamwork and individual excellence go hand in hand.

“We’ll Miss Him” – Truex Leaves a Void at JGR

Hamlin didn’t shy away from acknowledging the hole Truex’s departure leaves in the JGR family. Known for his calm demeanor and work ethic, Truex’s contributions to the team extended far beyond his performance behind the wheel.

“We’ll definitely miss Martin and everything he brings to Joe Gibbs Racing, and wish him the best.”

Brad Keselowski Joins the Tributes

Truex’s influence isn’t confined to the JGR garage. Brad Keselowski, the 2012 Cup champion and a longtime rival, shared his own reflections, blending respect with a touch of humor. Keselowski pointed to Truex’s dedication to his craft and his passion for life beyond racing.

“I think he is a great personality, very hard worker, loves fishing. I send a picture of a beer to him and he’ll send one right back to me. It’s a little joke I guess.”

This lighthearted anecdote underscores Truex’s camaraderie with his peers, a reminder of the human connections that underpin the intense competition of NASCAR.

A Legacy to Remember

Martin Truex Jr.’s career is more than just the stats—though they are impressive enough: 2017 NASCAR Cup champion, 34 race wins, and countless moments of brilliance. He is celebrated for the respect he earned from his peers, the professionalism he brought to his craft, and the humility with which he approached his success.

Truex Jr.’s Phoenix send-off, complete with a standing ovation during the drivers’ meeting, was a fitting tribute for a racer whose impact transcends the track.

As he embarks on the next chapter of his life—likely filled with fishing trips and beer-filled banter—Truex Jr. leaves behind a legacy that will inspire the next generation of NASCAR stars. From his storied career to his enduring friendships, Martin Truex Jr. will be remembered not just as a champion but as one of the sport’s most beloved figures.
