Denny Hamlin Praises Joey Logano’s Flawless Execution in 2024 Cup Series Championship Win

Joey Logano’s triumphant run to his third NASCAR Cup Series championship in Phoenix has earned praise from an unlikely source—his long-time rival Denny Hamlin. Despite Hamlin’s own championship frustrations, he didn’t hesitate to commend Logano and Team Penske for their strategic brilliance and execution in the season finale.

Logano’s Phoenix Masterclass

Starting second among the Championship 4 contenders, Logano utilized his strong starting position and leaned on a seamless strategy from his No. 22 team. With a car tuned for short-run speed and impeccable pit stops, Logano positioned himself at the front when it mattered most. Fending off a late charge from a rival Ford driver, he crossed the finish line to secure his third title.

Hamlin, who was eliminated in the penultimate race at Martinsville, acknowledged Logano’s standout performance in Phoenix, calling it a perfect race.

“Joey Logano, man. They did everything right. All I can say is they qualified the best, they had the best short-run speed. He had the best restart of any of the guys on that final restart, and he won a championship,” Hamlin said.

Hamlin’s Complicated Relationship with the Playoff System

While Hamlin’s praise for Logano seemed genuine, it came against the backdrop of his prior criticisms of NASCAR’s playoff format. The 43-year-old has been vocal about the system’s ability to undermine the regular season, labeling it as “delegitimizing.” Despite his reservations, Hamlin did not let his frustrations cloud his respect for Logano’s accomplishment.

However, the appreciation wasn’t without a twist. Logano took a subtle jab at Hamlin, suggesting that Hamlin was initially supportive of the current playoff format when NASCAR discussed its creation after the 2013 season.

Hamlin addressed the claim on his podcast, offering his perspective.

“I remember being part of the discussions, and I think Joey Logano mentioned that I was in the room and said it was my idea. I don’t know about that. I was part of the discussions on how we were going to do the stages.”

The exchange hints at a rivalry that may heat up further during the off-season.

Hamlin’s Relief Amid Logano’s Victory

While Logano basks in championship glory, Hamlin finds solace in the news that 23XI Racing, his co-owned team, and Front Row Motorsports (FRM) will be allowed to participate as open competitors in 2025. This resolution ensures their presence on the grid, though the fight to regain their charter status continues in court.

The Rivalry Resumes

As the dust settles on the 2024 NASCAR season, Logano enjoys his moment as champion, and Hamlin looks toward a fresh start. With both drivers likely to contend in 2025, their rivalry—on and off the track—will undoubtedly remain a storyline to watch. For now, Hamlin’s praise for Logano highlights the respect they share as competitors, even as their paths occasionally clash.
