Denny Hamlin expressed deep disappointment with the unsuccessful pit-stop strategy, despite having a fast Toyota car.

The dominance of the Hendrick Motorsports team was evident in Martinsville, as they secured all three podium positions in the race. Denny Hamlin, a driver for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), had a challenging race due to a late pit stop, which cost him a possible top-five finish or even a victory.

Starting from eighth position, Hamlin managed to gain a position in the first stage. Using his extensive experience, the 43-year-old driver climbed through the field and finished first in the second stage. However, the decision to pit early during the final stage proved ineffective, as it was difficult for him to regain the positions lost. The situation worsened when everyone else pitted to change tires before the overtime period, sealing his fate.

Hamlin believed that even with new tires, his car did not have the necessary speed. Furthermore, tire wear was not significant, allowing the leaders to maintain their positions. This left Hamlin feeling betrayed, as he realized that if he had stayed out on track without pitting, he could have secured at least a top-five finish.

“We struggled to pass all day, and the tires didn’t wear out. As soon as I cycled out of pit stops in third or fourth place, that’s where I remained,” Hamlin explained about the pit-stop risk and William Byron’s ability to navigate traffic on a challenging day for overtaking.

The race in Virginia was full of action, but it was William Byron who stood out as the most impressive driver. In contrast, Hamlin’s performance declined as Byron made impressive moves on a circuit known for its difficulty in overtaking.

Hamlin acknowledged that Hendrick Motorsports has a superior car compared to Joe Gibbs Racing, and their 26-year-old driver possesses exceptional skills to progress on a narrow track. The veteran driver was impressed by Byron’s racing abilities and praised his talent.

After a disappointing result outside the top-10 in Martinsville, Hamlin aims to regain momentum in his championship battle. Now, his focus shifts to the next race in Texas, where he hopes to make a strong comeback and climb up the standings.
