Virginia has a rich history in stock car racing and is home to iconic tracks like Richmond Raceway. However, another track, which has been around for over 50 years, is currently facing difficulties. Southside Speedway is on the verge of closing and desperately needs significant investment to avoid becoming a thing of the past. In 2021, the track closed completely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, recent efforts have been made to revive the track, with its future now in the hands of the state and Chesterfield County.

Denny Hamlin, one of the most accomplished and well-known NASCAR drivers in history, began his career at this same facility. After his victory at Richmond Raceway, Hamlin was asked about his potential involvement in the track restructuring project. In response, Hamlin expressed his willingness to operate the track if the project moves forward.

Hamlin also addressed the possibility of investing his own money in the track. He acknowledged that it would be a significant financial commitment unless a multi-functional facility is built. Hamlin emphasized the importance of hosting kart races, other racing series, and concerts to ensure the sustainability of the track.

Hamlin’s cautious approach to investing is understandable given the uncertainty surrounding the restructuring plan. However, it may be the best way for him to give back to the community and potentially help the city discover its next racing superstar, as no prominent driver has emerged following in Hamlin’s footsteps.
