Joe Gibbs Racing veteran commenced his 2024 season with an impressive victory at the LA Clash. He capitalized on the chaos during the race to secure his fourth career Clash win, as he had to make a comeback after falling to the back due to an early race spin. The race witnessed the rekindling of some old rivalries and the formation of a few new ones.
One of the incidents took place during the intermission at the event. The 2023 Daytona 500 champion exited his car during the 20-minute halftime break and approached Legacy MC’s vehicle. He leaned into it, removing the safety net, and engaged in a heated confrontation. Stenhouse Jr. was dissatisfied with the way JHN raced him during restarts.
Veteran Denny Hamlin expressed his dissatisfaction with Stenhouse Jr.’s approach to the altercation. He pointed out that the JTGR driver was being unfair when he confronted the LMC driver while he was still inside the car, as it didn’t give Nemechek a chance to respond. Hamlin reminded Stenhouse Jr. that his action was not a display of toughness.
The No:11 Toyota Camry driver went on to explain the rules of a genuine fight and highlighted that it should be a one-on-one situation with no involvement of a third party, ensuring both parties have an equal opportunity. He then referred to the fight between Ross Chastain and Noah Gragson from 2023 as a prime example of a real fight.
Heading into the 2024 season, if LMC doesn’t make a significant improvement in performance after their switch to Toyota, there is a high likelihood that Stenhouse Jr. and JHM will be competing for similar midfield positions in the coming years. This increases the probability of more such incidents, which could escalate into an intense rivalry.
