The 2024 season has been a tough one for Spire Motorsports veteran Corey LaJoie. After a career-best year in 2023, LaJoie entered this season with high hopes but has struggled to produce consistent results. His challenges have been compounded by his rookie teammate outperforming him, leading to Spire Motorsports deciding to part ways with him for the 2025 season.
LaJoie’s streak of bad luck continued during Monday’s race at Michigan. Late in the race, while battling for a top-20 finish with another driver, LaJoie lost control of his No. 7 Chevrolet, causing the car to flip and go airborne. Fortunately, the car landed safely, and LaJoie was able to walk away without serious injury.
The flip was unexpected, especially given the rarity of such incidents. Remarkably, LaJoie’s accident occurred just days after a similar flip in the Xfinity Series race on Saturday. Veteran driver Denny Hamlin, who witnessed the incident, didn’t hold back in his criticism, declaring that LaJoie was “his own worst enemy.”
“Corey LaJoie is just outta control, man. He’s his own worst enemy,” Hamlin remarked, surprising many fans with his blunt assessment.
In a post-race interview, LaJoie acknowledged the difficult season he’s endured, pointing out that he has flipped twice this year, both times when he had a fast car. He admitted that he has squandered opportunities and is determined to improve in the remaining 12 races of the season.
As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether LaJoie can turn things around and prove his worth, potentially securing a seat for the 2025 season.
