“Delusional or Dismissive?” Lando Norris Shuts Down Verstappen’s Bold McLaren Championship Claims

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - NOVEMBER 02: Sprint winner Lando Norris of Great Britain and McLaren and Third placed Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing attend the press conference after the Sprint ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Brazil at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace on November 02, 2024 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The fireworks in Formula 1 aren’t just on the track—Lando Norris has emphatically shot down Max Verstappen’s claim that he could have clinched the 2024 F1 World Championship even in Norris’ McLaren MCL38. Verstappen, fresh off securing his fourth drivers’ title, suggested he would have dominated regardless of the machinery, casting a shadow on Norris’ performance in what many consider the fastest car on the grid in the latter half of the season.

“History Says Otherwise” – Norris Fires Back

Norris didn’t take Verstappen’s dig lightly. He pointed out the near-impossibility of overturning the massive deficit he faced throughout the second half of the season. Despite McLaren’s significant improvements, Norris was unable to close the points gap, which remained consistently over 50 points for much of the latter half of the year.

“No, definitely not. I mean, no one ever in the history of Formula One has come back from the size of deficit I had,” Norris remarked, clearly referencing the statistical improbability of Verstappen’s assertion.

For context, the largest comeback in F1 history was Sebastian Vettel’s 2012 title win, where he overturned a 39-point deficit with seven races to go. Norris’ gap to Verstappen? A mountain that never shrank below 50 points during the critical stages of the championship.

Missed Opportunities: Norris’ Own Reflection

Despite his defensive stance, there’s no denying that Norris had opportunities to cut into Verstappen’s lead. Key moments in the season saw McLaren holding the fastest car on the grid, yet Norris often missed maximizing results. These missteps—whether through strategy errors, qualifying struggles, or race-day misfortunes—may have been the difference between taking the title fight to the wire and the current reality.

As Verstappen celebrated his title triumph in Las Vegas, Norris conceded that his focus has now shifted to a different objective: securing McLaren’s first Constructors’ Championship since 1998.

“We’ll now turn our attention to next weekend and coming back stronger in Qatar, a circuit that should suit our car better than Vegas. All our focus is on these last two races.”

The Constructors’ Battle: McLaren vs. Ferrari

While Verstappen’s claim ignited controversy, Norris and McLaren are laser-focused on the Constructors’ title. The gap to Ferrari has dwindled to just 24 points. With Qatar and Abu Dhabi expected to favor McLaren’s papaya-clad cars, Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri have their eyes firmly set on finishing the season strong.

However, Ferrari hasn’t thrown in the towel. Armed with a suite of floor upgrades for their SF-24, the Scuderia aims to counter McLaren’s late-season surge and keep their slim championship hopes alive.

A Battle of Legacies and Ambitions

While Verstappen’s comments highlight his confidence (and perhaps a hint of provocation), they also underscore the rivalry brewing between the two drivers. For Norris, dismissing the Dutchman’s claim wasn’t just about setting the record straight—it was about cementing his focus on proving himself as a legitimate title contender.

As McLaren and Ferrari prepare for the final two rounds, one thing is clear: the battle for 2024’s ultimate accolades may be over, but the war for dominance is far from finished. The stage is set for a thrilling climax to an unforgettable season.
