David Coulthard Questions Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Move and declares Lewis Hamilton’s form ‘pretty worrying’ for Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated move to Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season has sparked both excitement and skepticism. While Ferrari has embraced the seven-time champion as a “great asset,” former Red Bull driver and F1 pundit David Coulthard has raised concerns about Hamilton’s recent form and his ability to deliver results at Maranello.

At 40 years old, Hamilton is embarking on a new chapter after a challenging final year with Mercedes, where he struggled to match his younger teammate George Russell. Coulthard’s blunt assessment of Hamilton’s 2024 season underscores the doubts swirling around the Briton’s ability to reclaim his dominance in the sport.

A challenging final year with Mercedes

Hamilton’s 2024 campaign was marked by inconsistency. Despite breaking his nearly three-year winless streak with two coveted race victories, he finished the season behind Russell in the standings. His well-documented struggles in qualifying persisted, raising questions about how he’ll fare against Ferrari’s qualifying ace, Charles Leclerc.

Coulthard didn’t hold back in his critique:
“He’s got out of sorts with this current phase of his age and formula. Whether Ferrari are the kickstart to bring him back or not remains to be seen, but I’d say that’s pretty worrying.”

The clock is ticking

While acknowledging Hamilton’s unparalleled achievements, including seven world championships and a record-breaking career, Coulthard stressed that time is not on the Briton’s side.

“Doesn’t detract from his brilliance, doesn’t take away anything from the records, but there is a thing called Mother Nature, and the clock is ticking,” Coulthard remarked.

Hamilton’s age and the emergence of a younger, data-driven generation of drivers make his Ferrari stint a gamble. Coulthard noted that being consistently out-qualified by Russell in identical machinery during their Mercedes tenure was a concerning trend.

“Formula 1 isn’t a personality contest; it’s not an opinion contest – it’s a data-driven contest,” he said. “And to be out-qualified consistently by George… the greats don’t have bad cars.”

Ferrari’s hopes and Hamilton’s determination

Despite Coulthard’s skepticism, Ferrari is banking on Hamilton’s experience and leadership to help the team return to championship contention. After finishing a disappointing sixth in the Constructors’ standings in 2024, the Italian team sees Hamilton as a potential catalyst for improvement.

Hamilton, for his part, remains as driven as ever. While his age and recent form invite criticism, his ability to win races in a struggling Mercedes car last season proves he’s far from finished. Ferrari hopes that pairing him with Leclerc will reignite the competitive fire that once made Hamilton unstoppable.

A season to prove the doubters wrong

As Hamilton gears up for his debut season in Ferrari red, the stakes couldn’t be higher. For the Briton, it’s an opportunity to silence critics like Coulthard and chase the elusive eighth world title. For Ferrari, it’s a chance to leverage Hamilton’s vast experience to reclaim their place at the top of Formula 1.

Whether Hamilton thrives or falters in this new chapter remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: all eyes will be on the 40-year-old as he attempts to rewrite the narrative and prove that he still belongs among the sport’s elite.
