Damon Hill Fires Back at Max Verstappen’s Ambitions in Le Mans Amidst Potential Le Mans Debut

Former Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill has thrown shade at Max Verstappen’s aspirations to compete in the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours, insinuating that the young Red Bull driver still has a long way to go before considering such a move.

Despite Verstappen’s impressive track record in Formula 1 at just 27 years old, with four World Championships and 65 wins under his belt, Hill seems skeptical of the Dutchman’s eagerness to venture into other forms of motorsport.

Max Verstappen, known for his boldness on the track, recently took part in a GT3 test at the Nurburgring Nordschleife incognito as “Franz Hermann,” fueling speculations about his potential participation in the iconic endurance race at the Nurburgring.

While Verstappen has expressed his desire to also compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Damon Hill, who competed at Le Mans three years before his F1 debut, seemed unimpressed by Verstappen’s timeline for such a move.

Hill, who clinched the F1 title in 1996, jokingly responded to Verstappen’s ambitions, highlighting his own early foray into Le Mans before conquering Formula 1. The banter between the two racing icons has stirred excitement among fans and pundits alike.

Max Verstappen’s dream of participating in Le Mans post his F1 career has been a topic of discussion, especially as his current Red Bull contract extends until the end of the 2028 season. The anticipation of seeing Verstappen transition from F1 to endurance racing has set tongues wagging in the motorsport community.

Notably, Verstappen had previously expressed interest in teaming up with his father, Jos Verstappen, and fellow F1 champion Fernando Alonso for a Le Mans stint. However, a change in plans saw Verstappen searching for a new co-driver, with weight considerations becoming a crucial factor in the decision-making process.

The absence of a minimum weight limit for drivers at Le Mans prompted Verstappen to seek lightweight teammates to balance the team dynamics effectively. With Alonso’s compact build in mind, Verstappen is on the lookout for a compatible co-driver to navigate the challenges of endurance racing seamlessly.

As discussions around Verstappen’s Le Mans ambitions intensify, racing legend Tom Kristensen even humorously offered to come out of retirement to join forces with Verstappen and Alonso, adding an intriguing twist to the unfolding narrative.

The rivalry between Damon Hill and Max Verstappen has added spice to the motorsport landscape, with Hill’s recent critiques of Verstappen’s on-track conduct resonating with fans and experts. The clash between Verstappen and George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix reignited the debate over Verstappen’s aggressive racing style and its implications for his career trajectory.

Hill’s departure from his punditry role at Sky F1 following his outspoken remarks on Verstappen further fueled speculations about the underlying tensions in the racing world. Despite the controversies, Hill continues to engage with the sport as a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live, providing insightful commentary on the ever-evolving Formula 1 scene.

As Max Verstappen’s Le Mans aspirations take center stage, the racing community eagerly anticipates the next chapter in his illustrious career, poised at the intersection of F1 glory and endurance racing dreams.
