Dale Earnhardt Jr. Sounds Off After Justin Allgaier Fails to Lock into Daytona 500

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not happy—and he’s letting everyone know. After Justin Allgaier failed to qualify for the Daytona 500 on speed, the JR Motorsports owner took to social media with a sarcastic response about the lack of practice time at NASCAR’s biggest race.

JR Motorsports, making its Cup Series debut with the No. 40 Chevrolet, entered Daytona Speedweeks with high expectations. But after Wednesday night’s qualifying session, things didn’t go as planned.

Allgaier finished outside the top two Open cars, meaning he must race his way in through the Bluegreen Vacations Duel on Thursday night. With only two spots left for non-chartered teams, he’ll have to beat out veterans like Kaz Grala and Chandler Smith just to make it to the Great American Race.

Allgaier’s Frustration: ‘Damn, It Would’ve Been Nice to Lock In’

After missing out on a locked-in spot, Allgaier shared his frustration on X (formerly Twitter):

“Damn it woulda been nice to lock in tonight… But we get to come back tomorrow and race our way into the Daytona 500 in a Duel. Living the dream.”

While staying optimistic, the pressure is now on for the reigning Xfinity Series champion. If he fails to finish as one of the top Open cars in the Duel, JR Motorsports will miss the Daytona 500 in its very first attempt.

Dale Jr. Fires Back: ‘Here’s a Crazy Idea…’

But while Allgaier focuses on getting into the big race, his boss has other things on his mind—specifically, NASCAR’s lack of practice time for open teams.

A fan on X questioned why drivers don’t get more practice at Daytona, and Earnhardt Jr. let loose with a sarcastic response:

“Here’s an idea. Open the track up for practice. If you don’t want to practice, you don’t practice. If you want to practice, you practice. Crazy idea I know, but would you believe they used this method for decades with no real complaints.”

🔥 Dale Jr. isn’t wrong. Back in the day, teams had multiple practice sessions before Daytona 500 qualifying. But now, with NASCAR limiting practice time to cut costs, teams like JR Motorsports aren’t getting the reps they need to prepare for one of the most unpredictable races of the year.

Debate: Should NASCAR Bring Back More Practice?

🚗 Yes, More Practice Is Needed!
✅ Open teams need time to fine-tune their setups
✅ Less practice means more wrecks and unpredictable performances
✅ If drivers don’t want to practice, they can opt out

🏁 No, Keep It Limited!
❌ Extra practice costs teams more money
❌ The best teams adjust quickly and don’t need the extra time
❌ Less track time = more unpredictability, making for better racing

What’s Next for Allgaier & JR Motorsports?

The No. 40 team still has a shot to make the Daytona 500—but the pressure is on. Allgaier will need a strong performance in the Duel, but with no more practice time available, he’ll have to figure it out on the fly.
