Dale Earnhardt Jr. Backs NASCAR’s Game-Changing Bonus Rule—Could This Reshape the 2025 Season?

The 2025 Daytona 500 will forever be etched in the memory of Dale Earnhardt Jr. Not only did it mark the 24th death anniversary of his father, Dale Sr., who tragically lost his life in the 2001 Daytona 500 crash, but also because of a unique gift he received. An ardent fan, now deceased, bequeathed Junior with an original, Intimidator-driven car, the iconic #3 black and silver Monte Carlo, known for its terrifying presence on the track. The car, with its original orange interiors, added a touch of nostalgia to the momentous occasion.

However, the event was not just significant on a personal level for Dale Jr. It also marked the Cup Series debut of his team, JRM, a milestone in any team owner’s career. Since its inception in the 2005 Xfinity Series, JRM has secured 88 victories and four championships. But nothing compared to the experience of watching their team compete in the 500 in the Cup Series. NASCAR’s most prestigious race, the birthplace of the sport, was a sight to behold for Dale Jr, who took away a unique memento to remember this special day.

Dale Jr.’s penchant for peculiar collectibles led him to the JRM shop, where he collected all the spark plugs used in the #40 car during the Daytona 500. He even shared his prized possession on Instagram, with a caption that read: “These 8 plugs fired our sled around Daytona 500 miles. I’ll keep them forever.” The symbolism behind the spark plugs, which are integral to starting a car, is clear. They signify the beginning of JRM’s journey in the Cup Series.

The JRM team entrusted Justin Allgaier, their most reliable driver, with the responsibility of this critical race. Allgaier, a former 2024 Xfinity Series champion for JRM, exceeded expectations with a P9 finish in JRM’s first Daytona 500. This achievement surpassed Junior’s simple instructions before the race: “Forget expectations. Just make the race. Run all the laps. Finish.”

In a recent episode of the Dale Jr Download podcast, Junior shed light on JRM’s future plans for the Cup team. He expressed his reluctance to invest $40 million in a Charter, instead preferring a 20% ownership. For this, he would need a majority owner willing to financially support JRM’s Cup campaign. This is in line with Denny Hamlin’s partnership with Michael Jordan for 23XI Racing. Junior is optimistic about finding a partner, given his and Kelly Earnhardt’s reputation in the sport.

With NASCAR’s popularity on the wane, securing sponsors has become increasingly challenging. However, Junior sees potential in partnering with private equity investors, akin to how Jimmie Johnson roped in private equity firm Knighthead Capital Management for his Legacy Motor Club.

Junior, however, is particular about his partner. He’s looking for someone who shares a mutual understanding and camaraderie, similar to an old friend. In the past, deals have fallen through due to a lack of chemistry.

As we look forward to the 2026 Cup Series, we can only hope that Junior finds his ideal partner, and we get to see the #40 car in action in the Cup Series full-time. Who do you think would be the perfect fit to drive it? Share your thoughts with us.
