Dale Earnhardt Jr. Applauds Goodyear’s Progress in NASCAR Tire Innovation: A Look at Their Recent Successes and Future Plans

The NASCAR Next Gen tire was a two-year development process that consisted of close collaboration with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), NASCAR, race teams and drivers, undergoing tests at over 25 tracks, from superspeedways to short tracks and road courses. In his recent interview, Dale Earnhardt Jr. passionately voiced his support for Goodyear, NASCAR’s stalwart tire partner, following its innovative approach to tire development in 2025. Last year, the Food City 500 race saw Goodyear unveil a tire package that redefined NASCAR racing. The new tire design led to an unpredictable race with high rubber fall-off and exciting strategic challenges, leaving both fans and seasoned professionals craving for more.

Despite hitting a few bumps along the way, notably during the All-Star Race and the second Bristol race, Goodyear remained undeterred. Their dedication to research and development saw them present an outstanding tire combination in 2025 that left an indelible impression on Dale Earnhardt Jr.

The Bass Pro Shops Night race, despite its fair share of controversies, was a testament to Goodyear’s tire innovation. Kyle Larson, who led 462 of the 500 laps, found himself in stark contrast to the previous Bristol race that saw 50 lead changes. The inconsistent performance led to a barrage of criticism from NASCAR fans, which Larson and Goodyear braved. As we ushered in 2025, the criticisms have seemingly quietened, indicating that Goodyear’s tire technology is finally hitting its stride.

Earnhardt Jr., whose impressive trophy haul includes his first Sprint Cup win in 2000 and twin Daytona 500 victories in 2004 and 2014, all achieved on Goodyear tires, lauded the tire manufacturer’s progress. Speaking in a recent episode of Dale Jr Download, he emphasized the remarkable strides made by Goodyear in tire development for short tracks. He particularly highlighted the tire’s improved fall-off and wear, which are trending positively.

The Ambetter Health 400 race provided further evidence of Goodyear’s progress. Earnhardt Jr. noted how the new tires, performing exceptionally well on high-speed tracks like Atlanta, allowed strategic pit stops that significantly influenced race outcomes.

In light of these developments, Earnhardt Jr. stood in defense of Goodyear, quelling the tide of complaints from fans and drivers alike. He praised the tire company’s commitment to innovation, stating, “I’m very happy with the work that Goodyear’s been doing across the board.”

Moreover, Goodyear shows no signs of slowing down. At the forthcoming EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix race at the Circuit of The Americas, NASCAR Cup teams will feature a different tire set-up based on an 18-inch bead diameter tire. This design, a first in the sport, implies increased tire wear and lap-time fall-off. In addition, Goodyear plans to introduce 18-inch wet weather radial tires, ready to be deployed should the conditions require.

Goodyear’s general manager of global race tires, Stu Grant, elaborated on the company’s tire innovation. He stated that the redesigned Circuit of The Americas would give NASCAR teams a chance to fine-tune their car set-ups with the newly introduced tires.

Meanwhile, the NASCAR Xfinity Series will continue with the 15-inch bead-diameter tires, the same as last season. Regardless of the series, it’s clear that Goodyear is relentlessly improving its tire technology, earning Earnhardt Jr.’s applause and continuing to revolutionize NASCAR racing.
