Dakar Dreams Shattered: Sébastien Loeb Joins Carlos Sainz on the Sidelines After Devastating Disqualification

In a shocking turn of events at the 2025 Dakar Rally, motorsport legend Sébastien Loeb’s campaign came to a screeching halt following a high-speed crash and a subsequent safety inspection that deemed his Dacia Sandrider unfit to continue. The heartbreaking decision by FIA stewards came after Loeb’s car sustained irreparable damage to its safety cage during a harrowing roll on stage three.

A Promising Start Cut Short

Loeb, paired with navigator Fabian Lurquin, began stage three with high hopes, but just 12 kilometers into the grueling 327-kilometer route between Bisha and Al Henakiyah, disaster struck. A ditch on a partially off-piste section sent their car tumbling into a series of rolls, leaving the Sandrider battered and their Dakar dreams hanging by a thread.

Despite the dramatic crash, Loeb and Lurquin miraculously emerged unscathed and managed to limp back to the bivouac. However, significant damage and overheating issues saw them drop over an hour behind stage winner Saood Variawa, leaving the pair 16th in the overall standings.

Stewards Say “No Go”

After intense repairs and an anxious wait, Loeb’s hopes were dashed when the FIA Technical Delegate determined that the damage to the car’s safety cage rendered it unsafe to compete. The stewards’ ruling was unequivocal: Loeb’s #219 Dacia Sandrider was disqualified from the event.

The stewards’ report stated:

“At the end of stage three, the safety cage of car #219 was inspected following a crash during the selective section and found damage. In the opinion of the FIA Technical Delegate, considering the damage of the safety cage, and based on article 283-1 of the Appendix J, it is not safe to allow the competitor to continue on the event.”

Another Favorite Falls

Loeb’s disqualification adds to a growing list of casualties among pre-race favorites. Just days earlier, Carlos Sainz’s hopes were dashed after a violent crash during the 48-hour chrono stage left his M-Sport Ford unsalvageable. For rally fans, the premature exits of two giants of the sport are a bitter pill to swallow.

Dakar’s Elusive Glory for Loeb

Despite his unparalleled success in other disciplines, including nine WRC titles, Dakar glory has eluded Loeb. This year marked his ninth attempt since 2019, and once again, his journey ended in frustration. The setback underscores the unforgiving nature of the Dakar Rally, where even the most seasoned competitors are at the mercy of the brutal terrain and stringent safety standards.

What’s Next for Loeb?

While the Dakar dream is over for 2025, Loeb remains a giant in motorsport with plenty to prove in other arenas. As fans reel from the disappointment, they can only hope to see him return stronger, continuing his pursuit of the one crown that has consistently slipped through his grasp.

For now, the Dakar rolls on, with favorites falling and new heroes emerging in the relentless desert battle. But the absence of Loeb and Sainz leaves a void that underscores the harsh reality of the world’s toughest rally.
