Cupra Terramar: The Spanish Brand’s Bold New Crossover Set for September Unveiling

Cupra, the dynamic Spanish automotive brand under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, is gearing up to unveil its latest creation, the Cupra Terramar. This new crossover marks a significant step for the brand, coinciding with the opening of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona. The official reveal is set for September 3, with a livestream accessible at 12:15 PM CET (6:15 AM EST).

To build anticipation, Cupra has installed a countdown Cube on Barcelona’s beach, teasing details about the Terramar in the lead-up to the grand unveiling. But what exactly is the Cupra Terramar? It’s a stylish new crossover that serves as an indirect successor to the recently discontinued SEAT Tarraco. Launched in 2018, the Tarraco shared its platform with the Audi Q3, previous-generation Skoda Kodiaq, and the older VW Tiguan.

The 2024 Cupra Terramar rides on the Volkswagen Group’s versatile MQB Evo platform, which underpins a wide range of models including the latest VW Tiguan, Skoda Octavia, and Cupra Formentor. This platform allows for a variety of powertrain options, with reports suggesting that the Terramar will feature 1.5- and 2.0-liter engines, some of which will be partially electrified.

Recent spy shots have hinted at a performance-oriented Terramar VZ model, expected to be offered in two power outputs. The base version is likely to deliver 242 horsepower (245 ps/180 kW), while the higher-performance variant could exceed 296 hp (300 ps/221 kW). Additionally, the lineup is expected to include mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, with the most efficient PHEV offering an electric range of approximately 62 miles (100 km) on a full charge—similar to Europe’s VW Tiguan.

As the September 3 unveiling approaches, Cupra is expected to drip-feed more details about the Terramar, keeping enthusiasts and potential buyers intrigued. The first deliveries are anticipated to begin this fall, with production taking place in Hungary at the same facility that assembles the Cupra Formentor and Audi Q3.

However, for those in the U.S., there’s a catch: the Cupra Terramar won’t be making its way across the Atlantic. Instead, the first Cupra model expected to be assembled and sold in the U.S. market will be the next-generation Formentor EV.

With its bold design, advanced platform, and a range of electrified powertrains, the Cupra Terramar is shaping up to be a compelling addition to the European crossover segment. Whether you’re a fan of the brand or simply curious about its latest offerings, the Terramar promises to be a significant milestone for Cupra as it continues to expand its footprint in the automotive world.
