Croatia’s Rally Journey: A Shift to the ERC in 2025, WRC Return Secured for 2026 and 2027

Croatia’s rally legacy in the World Rally Championship (WRC) isn’t ending—it’s just evolving. After facing funding challenges, Croatia will shift gears, hosting a European Rally Championship (ERC) round in 2025 before making a grand return to the WRC in 2026 and 2027. This temporary move is seen as an opportunity for Croatia Rally organizers to further solidify their reputation within European motorsport, as highlighted by Daniel Šaškin, president of the Croatia Rally organizing committee.

“When Croatia Rally joined the WRC in 2021, we knew it would become an instant classic,” said Simon Larkin, WRC Promoter event director. He emphasized that Croatia’s presence in the ERC would introduce fresh competition for ERC drivers and potentially attract WRC teams, adding, “It’s a new sporting challenge that will appeal to both ERC regulars and WRC teams alike.”

Since joining the WRC calendar in 2021, Croatia has become a fan-favorite and a staple of rally sport. The WRC Promoter lauded Croatia for its sporting and promotional success, noting that the event has set high standards in both organization and fan engagement. In 2025, Croatia’s experience from four successful WRC editions will elevate the ERC, bringing a benchmark of excellence to the competition.

Šaškin expressed his pride in fulfilling the promise to bring WRC back to Croatia with support from the Croatian government and other partners. “Through our experience and successful organization, we continue to position Croatia as a motorsport hub,” he said, underscoring Croatia’s dedication to motorsport.

Toyota’s drivers have made their mark on Croatia’s WRC history, with the team winning all four editions. Sébastien Ogier has taken two wins, while Elfyn Evans and Kalle Rovanperä each secured a victory on the challenging Zagreb course.

As Croatia prepares to temporarily join the ERC, fans and competitors alike can look forward to the nation’s return to the WRC, carrying forward a rally legacy that only continues to grow.
