Jak Crawford, from the United States, running for Dams, emerged victorious in the Barcelona Main Race of the 2024 Formula 2 season. He overtook pole position Paul Aron to secure his first win of the season. Crawford took the lead early on and took advantage of the safety car periods and late pit stops to secure the victory, finishing ahead of the current championship leader. Juan Manuel Correa also had an impressive race, redeeming himself after losing his podium position in the Sprint due to track limits. He managed to secure a place on the podium. Unfortunately, Kimi Antonelli from Prema Racing had a stroke of bad luck, stopping on the formation lap and being forced to start from the pits after qualifying in fifth place. Roman Stanek faced a similar fate and also had to start from the pits due to cold conditions. Aron had a good start but was involved in a major collision between Victor Martins and Dennis Hauger, which resulted in both drivers getting stuck in the gravel at turn 3. This incident led to the deployment of the safety car. Franco Colapinto from MP Motorsport managed to overtake Jak Crawford before the safety car came out. Red Bull junior driver Isack Hadjar made an impressive start and gained six positions on the first lap, putting himself in fifth place before the safety car period. Antonelli, starting from the pits, made progress and climbed to 19th position on the first lap, hoping to regain some points. The safety car returned to the pits on lap 4, with Aron maintaining the lead into turn 1, closely followed by Crawford. Oliver Bearman from Prema Racing aimed to recover from his disappointing performance in the Sprint race and managed to climb from 15th to ninth place on lap 5. As rain started to fall in sector 3, the drivers had to carefully manage their tires in the early stages of the Main race. Aron maintained a 2.3-second advantage over Crawford on lap 6 and set the fastest lap of the race. The top five drivers on lap 8 were all using soft tires, which showed signs of wear due to the early rain. A fierce battle for seventh place unfolded between Ritomo Miyata, Zak O’Sullivan, and Bearman, with the drivers staying within a second of each other. Crawford, Miyata, and Stanek made their pit stops on lap 7 to switch from soft to hard tires, aiming to gain an advantage over their competitors through the undercut strategy. Drivers who opted for hard tires, such as O’Sullivan, Antonelli, and Taylor Barnard, hoped to last longer in the race, but the possibility of rain could disrupt their plans. During the first round of pit stops between laps 7 and 10, some drivers, including Zane Maloney and Enzo Fittipaldi, chose to switch to hard tires instead of soft ones.
In the early stages of the race, Mercedes junior driver Antonelli found himself in 14th place and was determined to reach a scoring position.
The current race leader, Aron, continued to set the fastest lap with the soft tires until lap 11, when he decided to make a pit stop.
Unfortunately, Aron’s pit stop was slow and he almost lost his position to Colapinto, who was right behind him in the pitlane. However, Aron managed to regain his position on the track ahead of his competitors.
Crawford, who opted for the undercut strategy, quickly overtook Aron, causing him to lose the ninth position to the DAMS driver.
Unexpectedly, Barnard stopped and entered the pitlane, resulting in a Virtual Safety Car situation that brought the pack closer together on lap 14.
With the race resuming and the drivers approaching the first corner, Aron had the opportunity to activate the DRS and try to regain his position. He faced pressure from Gabriel Bortoleto, who was right behind him.
Despite a good start, Hadjar was prevented by Maloney, who prevented the Red Bull junior driver from overtaking and taking 13th position at turn 3.
Aron made a crucial mistake on lap 15, going off track while trying to overtake Crawford at turn 14. This mistake cost him three positions.
Finally, Bearman managed to make a successful overtaking maneuver and passed Miyata at turn 3, using the undercut strategy.
Josh Duerksen, who was leading the race with a six-second advantage, dropped to the back of the grid after opting for an alternative strategy.
Duerksen had planned a late pit stop, but ended up stopping on track, causing a second period of Virtual Safety Car before finally retiring from the race.
On lap 20, the top six drivers had not yet made their pit stops during the Virtual Safety Car period. Antonelli, who had moved up to sixth place, was among them.
Correa took the lead after the restart, while Aron managed to take tenth position from O’Sullivan on the inside of turn 1.
Bearman received the first black and white flag, hoping to improve his previous position in the Sprint race outside the points.
O’Sullivan lost another position on lap 21, this time to Hadjar, as he tried to fight back into contention for points.
The battle between Bortoleto and Colapinto continued, with both drivers aiming to finish the race on the podium. They had a confrontation at the entrance of Sector 1.
Colapinto tried to overtake Bortoleto coming out of turn 1 on lap 22, but Bortoleto successfully blocked the Argentine driver’s maneuver.
With 15 laps remaining, Maloney made a successful overtaking maneuver, this time passing O’Sullivan on the main straight entering lap 23, moving up to 12th place.
Finally, on lap 23, Colapinto managed to make the pass and overtook Bortoleto at turn 2. He executed an incredibly late braking maneuver after taking advantage of the slipstream.
In an exciting display of speed, Aron set the fastest lap on lap 23, with the aim of overtaking Bortoleto and reclaiming his position on the track.
To worsen his difficulties, O’Sullivan received black and white flags on lap 25 for exceeding track limits.
The top six drivers failed to create a significant advantage over the drivers behind them, who had fresher tires, while waiting for a safety car.
Crawford, with old hard tires, found himself less than a second behind Antonelli, taking advantage of the slipstream on the main straight to his advantage.
While maneuvering on the inside of Prema Racing’s pilot in turn 4 on lap 26, Crawford managed to move up to fifth place.
Colapinto closely followed Antonelli, looking for an opportunity to attack Crawford ahead, while staying less than 1.6 seconds behind the Mercedes junior driver.
The race leader finally entered the pits on lap 27, with 10 laps remaining, opting for soft tires to secure points in the championship.
Kush Maini also made a pit stop to switch to soft tires, while Aron skillfully overtook Bortoleto in turn 1 to move up to fifth place.
After the final round of pit stops, Crawford regained the race lead, with a 3.5-second advantage over Colapinto heading into lap 29.
After his pit stop, Correa climbed to seventh place, overtaking Maloney on the outside of turn 7.
Antonelli exited the pits in 17th position, with only seven laps remaining, while his Prema Racing teammate was in 11th place.
Correa made an impressive comeback, overtaking both Hadjar and Bortoleto on lap 31 to secure fifth place and a spot on the podium.
On lap 33, in turn 1, he claimed the podium position from championship leader Aron, redeeming himself from his missed opportunity in the previous Sprint race.
Consistently setting the fastest laps, Correa was two seconds faster than the top five drivers on each lap, while chasing the lead.
As the soft tires began to wear out, Correa eased off his pursuit of second-place Colapinto and comfortably secured third place on the podium.
On the final lap, the two Invicta Racing drivers collided while battling for sixth place, ruining their chances of catching Hadjar.
Aron, after losing his initial lead, found himself in fourth place, ahead of Hadjar and the two Invicta Racing drivers in sixth and seventh places.
Amaury Cordeel finished ahead of Pepe Marti, who secured the last scoring position, ahead of the Prema Racing cars.
