After the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, Max Verstappen’s brave defensive performance in Imola spared Red Bull the embarrassment of three consecutive losses in Formula 1 that could have occurred in Monaco. Does this mean that the dominant force of the ground effect era is in trouble? Or is the return to Red Bull’s usual supremacy just around the corner in Formula 1?
Let’s hear what our writers have to say:
Gary Anderson:
Sometimes, you have to make the most of a bad weekend, and that’s exactly what Verstappen did by finishing sixth. However, if we look at the last three race weekends – Miami, Imola, and Monaco – none of them were smooth. Except for Monaco, where Red Bull faced serious challenges in qualifying, it has been a close competition. Ferrari and McLaren, with their strong teams, have shown that their developments have put them in the fight. This will force Red Bull to rethink their strategies and decision-making. After enjoying dominance in the past seasons, Red Bull will now face a tougher development path. This sets the stage for an exciting battle between Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull as the season progresses.
Scott Mitchell-Malm:
Do you remember the early days of 2022 when we all thought there would be a title fight on the horizon? And do you remember the moment when Charles Leclerc’s failure in Baku destroyed that hope? Back then, Leclerc was 34 points behind Verstappen, and their teams were heading in opposite directions. Now, Leclerc is only 31 points behind, and Ferrari seems to be a team on the rise. We are a third of the way through the season, and although a title fight seems unlikely – even Leclerc doubts it – I can’t help but feel that Ferrari and McLaren will fiercely compete against each other, allowing Verstappen to clinch the championship relatively easily. However, the constructor’s championship is far from certain. Rivals are closing in, the Red Bull car’s advantage is not unbeatable at all circuits, and their second car is starting to fall behind. Ferrari or McLaren may pose a serious challenge at the front of the team this year. In the long run, it seems increasingly likely that Red Bull’s reign will come to an end.
Edd Straw:
Monaco was an exceptional case, so we should not expect it to become the new normal for Red Bull. However, this weekend provided more evidence that the competition is intensifying, and although Verstappen and Red Bull still win many races, other teams pose a greater threat. This is not only encouraging for the rest of the 2024 season, but also for next year, as there were concerns that Verstappen and Red Bull would easily win the 2025 championship. While there may not be many weekends like Monaco this year, we can anticipate more competition at the front on favorable circuits. This will make Verstappen’s life more challenging, but also allow him to showcase his brilliance. If it weren’t for his exceptional performance in Imola and the difficulties faced by Sergio Perez in Monaco, the outcome could have been even worse for Red Bull.
Samarth Kanal:
It seems we have a title fight on our hands after the Monaco Grand Prix. Red Bull’s issues in Monaco are likely to resurface at other circuits with severe bumps, as well as at tracks where drivers need to aggressively tackle the kerbs, such as Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and COTA. The problem seems to be inherent to the Red Bull car, and although they may not face the same difficulties in future qualifying sessions (with Verstappen starting sixth and Perez 16th in Monaco), I expect McLaren and, especially, Ferrari to score points and potentially surpass the defending champion in the upcoming races of this season. With only 24 points separating Ferrari and Red Bull heading into Canada, it is undeniable that we have a battle for the constructors’ championship on our hands.
Glenn Freeman:
I understand why people may be excited about a tight season based on the trends we’ve seen in Miami, Imola, and Monaco. However, I still believe that Red Bull will have a clear advantage on more conventional circuits. Therefore, I do not see this as a sudden vulnerability for Verstappen and Red Bull in the championship. However, it is clear that Ferrari and McLaren have reduced the gap and are within striking distance. Red Bull will now have to work harder for their wins and will be vulnerable to genuine attacks – and as we have witnessed in two of the last three races, genuine defeats – when not everything goes perfectly for them. This is good news for fans who want to see fierce competition at the front.
