The Formula 1 world is abuzz with speculation as the 2026 regulations reset looms on the horizon, with sweeping changes expected to shake up the grid. Among the boldest predictions comes from former McLaren mechanic and F1 presenter Marc Priestley, who suggested that Max Verstappen, the four-time World Champion, might consider a move to Williams for the 2026 season.


Red Bull’s Dominance in Question

Max Verstappen has been the cornerstone of Red Bull’s success since his meteoric rise in 2016. With four Drivers’ Championships to his name, he’s firmly established as one of the sport’s all-time greats. However, Red Bull’s 2024 season showed cracks in their dominance, with McLaren clinching the Constructors’ title and Ferrari narrowing the gap.

Looking ahead to 2025, the stakes are even higher, but Verstappen appears less concerned about immediate championship glory and more focused on the looming 2026 reset.


Williams’ Resurgence Under James Vowles

Williams, a team steeped in F1 history, has been on a steady upward trajectory since James Vowles took the helm. Major restructuring efforts, strategic hires, and enhanced infrastructure have fueled optimism about the team’s potential to reclaim its place at the sharp end of the grid.

Marc Priestley believes this makes Williams a tantalizing prospect for Verstappen, stating:

“We also know Verstappen has had a lot of talks with Mercedes. You could also look at Williams, who, under the leadership of James Vowles, are building heavily towards 2026 with big expectations. I know for a fact they expect to compete right at the top with the best teams on the grid. Maybe it’s an opportunity for Verstappen.”


The Temptation of a Fresh Challenge

For a driver of Verstappen’s caliber, moving to a team like Williams could offer a unique challenge—proving his dominance in a reshuffled grid. Verstappen has shown loyalty to Red Bull, but his long-term future may hinge on how well the team adapts to the upcoming regulations. With Verstappen’s contract running through 2028, a mid-contract switch would not be unprecedented in the sport’s volatile driver market.

Williams’ potential resurgence could align perfectly with Verstappen’s ambitions. Priestley’s comments suggest the Grove-based team could attract Verstappen by 2026 if their trajectory toward becoming a title contender holds true.


Max Verstappen’s Thoughts on 2026

Despite the buzz, Verstappen appears relaxed about the future, even entertaining the idea of stepping away from the sport entirely. The Dutchman recently welcomed news of a growing family, which could influence his long-term plans.

“In 2026, of course, there will also be new rules. But at the moment I’m not that busy with that, to be honest.”

His comments reflect a driver who, while deeply committed to his craft, might also be considering life beyond Formula 1.


The Unpredictable Road to 2026

As the 2025 season unfolds, teams will be walking a tightrope between focusing on current success and preparing for the seismic changes in 2026. Any team dominating next year could just as easily falter under the new regulations.

For Verstappen, the allure of a fresh challenge, particularly with a resurgent Williams, might be hard to resist. Whether it’s a bid to cement his legacy or a bold new adventure, the transfer market could see seismic shifts—led by none other than Verstappen himself.

What’s clear is that 2026 promises to be a fascinating chapter in Formula 1, with Verstappen’s next move at the heart of the drama.
