Corey LaJoie’s Daytona 500 mystery: What’s next for NASCAR’s journeyman?

As the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season opener looms, the buzz around part-time drivers is almost as intense as the anticipation for the full-time grid. With legends like Jimmie Johnson and Helio Castroneves set to battle in the Daytona 500, one name has surprisingly slipped into speculation: Corey LaJoie. Once a mainstay in Spire Motorsports’ No. 7 Chevrolet, LaJoie’s future in NASCAR remains an enigma—and fans are dying to know what’s next.

The rise, fall, and optimism of Corey LaJoie

Corey LaJoie’s three-year stint with Spire Motorsports showcased a steady upward trajectory until it didn’t. From a solid 2023 season with three top-tens, two top-fives, and 66 laps led, LaJoie seemed poised for greater heights. But 2024 told a different story. With just one top-five finish, three top-tens, and a series of DNFs, his performance faltered. The nadir came at Pocono when LaJoie triggered a controversial incident by clipping Kyle Busch’s rear bumper, drawing the ire of fans and critics alike.

By July 2024, LaJoie’s NASCAR career took a dramatic turn when Spire Motorsports cut ties with him, opting to replace him with Justin Haley. A mid-season stint with Rick Ware Racing (RWR) in the No. 51 Ford seemed like a chance at redemption, but Cody Ware ultimately claimed that ride, leaving LaJoie without a seat for 2025.

Hints of a comeback?

Despite the setbacks, LaJoie has maintained a resilient spirit. In a cryptic Instagram reel, the driver teased fans with a flashy helmet, articles about his uncertain career, and a cheeky wink, hinting at potential plans in the works. The caption, “I love the internet. 😉 #stackingpennies”, sparked speculation that a new opportunity may be on the horizon.

NASCAR insider Bob Pockrass didn’t completely quash the hopes of LaJoie loyalists, noting that while LaJoie won’t be full-time in Rick Ware Racing’s No. 51 car, the driver is actively working on his 2025 plans. Could a part-time Daytona 500 run be part of the puzzle?

Fans divided on LaJoie’s trajectory

While some fans still rally behind LaJoie, others are less forgiving of his recent missteps. The Pocono incident with Kyle Busch tarnished his reputation in some circles, but LaJoie’s heartfelt message after parting ways with Spire Motorsports struck a chord with many. “We will finish the remainder of 2024 strong, continuing to deliver for my partners, my guys who work hard to build good cars, family, fans & friends who have supported me since day one in the Cup Series…I’m excited to see what the Lord has in store for my family next,” LaJoie wrote.

What’s next for NASCAR’s “Stacking Pennies” star?

While LaJoie’s full-time prospects seem uncertain, his resilience and charisma make him a potential draw for a part-time Daytona 500 bid or other high-profile appearances. Could a surprise announcement place him alongside the likes of Jimmie Johnson and Helio Castroneves on the 2025 Daytona grid? Or will LaJoie pivot to a new chapter in his racing career, focusing on building his presence beyond the Cup Series?

Whatever comes next, one thing is certain: Corey LaJoie’s story is far from over. For fans and skeptics alike, the question lingers—will 2025 mark a turning point for NASCAR’s ultimate underdog?
