Controversy Erupts Over Lando Norris Penalty: McLaren’s Andrea Stella Slams Stewards’ Interference

Oracle Red Bull racing driver Max Verstappen talks to McLaren Racing driver Lando Norris after the sprint race at the Formula 1 Pirelli United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024.

The decision to penalize Lando Norris is just the beginning of what promises to be a heated debate in the world of Formula 1. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella didn’t hold back, expressing his disappointment with the stewards’ involvement, which he deemed “inappropriate.” Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Stella criticized the ruling, claiming it disrupted what could have been a thrilling moment in motorsport.

“In my opinion, the way the stewards interfered in a beautiful moment of motor racing was inappropriate, because both cars went off track, and both gained an advantage,” said Stella.

The penalty ultimately cost McLaren a podium finish, a tough pill to swallow after a race where Norris had fought back after being pushed off track on the first lap and first corner. McLaren had accepted the initial setback and remained patient throughout the race.

“It’s a shame because it cost us a podium in a race where we stayed patient after being forced off on lap one, turn one. We accepted the situation.”

However, Stella acknowledged that McLaren must now move on, as this type of decision is not open to appeal.

“That said, our position is clear, this kind of decision cannot be subject to appeal. This chapter is now closed, and we move on to the next race.”

The penalty and McLaren’s reaction are likely to spark further discussions within the paddock, as teams and fans weigh in on whether the stewards’ decision was justified or overly intrusive in a sport known for its fierce on-track battles.
