IndyCar star Colton Herta’s potential future in Formula 1 is drawing increased attention, as he is reportedly being considered by the incoming Cadillac team for the F1 2026 season. Herta, a key player in the Andretti line-up, has garnered significant attention due to his success in the IndyCar series and his potential to tap into the vast American audience.

Graeme Lowdon, the newly appointed team boss of Cadillac F1, confirmed that Herta is indeed on their radar. However, the American driver’s lack of sufficient Super Licence points remains a hurdle. As per FIA regulations, drivers need to amass 40 points across different series and junior categories over three years to qualify for an F1 Super Licence. Despite Herta’s excellent performance, his stints outside the FIA-controlled motorsport realm leave him short of the requirement.

Despite the Super Licence points issue, Lowdon acknowledges Herta’s skills and talent. He affirms that the team’s decision will be merit-based, emphasizing that being an American driver doesn’t disqualify one from being a good F1 contender. In fact, Cadillac’s long-term vision includes the establishment of a junior driver academy programme, opening the door for more American drivers to make it to the team based on merit.

Herta’s F1 future, however, isn’t solely dependent on his IndyCar performance. Other possible avenues to acquire the necessary Super Licence points include participation in the lower categories that don’t clash with the IndyCar calendar or involvement in up to 10 FP1 sessions this year. Under FIA rules, drivers can earn a point per FP1 session, provided they drive more than 100 kilometres. This could potentially see Cadillac collaborating with a team to aid in Herta’s goal, with Sauber and Haas as potential candidates, given Cadillac’s association with Ferrari.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Herta’s been linked to F1. Red Bull had previously eyed Herta for a potential switch to AlphaTauri for the 2023 season, a move that eventually fell through due to the same Super Licence issue.

In light of these developments, Herta’s current focus is on the ongoing season of the IndyCar championship. A top-four finish would secure him the needed Super Licence points, putting him firmly on the path to F1. As the 2026 F1 season approaches, Colton Herta’s journey is one to keep a close eye on, as it could redefine the future of American drivers in Formula 1.
