In a bold and surprising move, Williams Team Principal James Vowles chose Franco Colapinto to replace the struggling Logan Sargeant, whose crash during FP3 at the Dutch GP sealed his F1 exit. While Mercedes boss Toto Wolff lobbied hard for Mick Schumacher to take Sargeant’s seat, Vowles stood firm, trusting his own instincts and giving the relatively unproven Colapinto a shot.
Despite Colapinto’s underwhelming results in F2 and F3, the Argentine delivered an impressive performance at his F1 debut in Monza. Starting from 18th, Colapinto fought his way to finish 12th, just 13 seconds behind his highly-rated teammate, Alex Albon. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated Kimi Antonelli made his Mercedes debut, only to crash in FP1 at Monza, but it did not sway the team’s decision to sign him as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement for 2025.
Vowles praised Colapinto’s composure, stating, “He didn’t lose position at the start, performed well in the pitstop, and apart from a small mistake in qualifying, he was within a tenth of Alex. Without that error, I believe he could have fought for a point on his first outing. I’m very happy with everything he’s done.”
Vowles explained his decision to choose Colapinto over Schumacher: “Part of the reason he’s in the car is his ability to handle immense pressure. He’s fast, and people don’t realize it yet. What he’s shown in the simulator and at Silverstone convinced me he has the potential.”
The Williams boss remains optimistic about Colapinto’s potential to score points before the season ends, though he tempered expectations. “He has a chance in Baku, but he needs a perfect weekend. I think it’s too much pressure to put on him, but with updates coming, I’m confident he’ll be in point-scoring contention.”
With the seat being kept warm for Carlos Sainz’s 2025 arrival from Ferrari, Colapinto now has the chance to prove he belongs in F1.
