Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell didn’t hold back after the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, making some bold remarks about Ryan Blaney’s role in helping his Team Penske teammate Joey Logano secure a pivotal win. Despite dominating the race by leading 155 laps and having one of the fastest cars on the track, Bell fell short as Logano’s fuel-saving strategy prevailed, clinching his spot in the Championship 4.
Bell’s frustration was evident when he implied that Blaney, who was far outside of contention running in P30 after a tough weekend, played defense for Logano. The defending Cup champion used Blaney to create a buffer between himself and Bell in the closing laps, giving Logano the edge to hold on to the lead.
“Regardless of how much time he had, the 12 car was with Joey trying to play defense for him,” Bell said post-race. “So, it was going to take the right move to get by him, but we had, what was it, 30 almost 40 lap newer tires? … I think it’s fair game, and you know, props to him.”
Bell also pointed out the irony in Blaney helping Logano, given that they’re both vying for spots in the Championship 4. By aiding his teammate, Blaney sacrificed his own points battle, ensuring that Penske got at least one car through to the final round.
“I think the 22 winning was probably bad for the 12,” Bell remarked. “Because they’re racing each other for points to get in. So, you know, Penske, they won the race and got one car in, so they did it right.”
While Bell acknowledged the strategic nature of the move, he was clearly disappointed by how the race unfolded. He noted that despite having the fastest car and a flawless effort from his team, Logano’s victory slipped through his fingers.
“I don’t think I’ve come to terms yet. I don’t know. Just a bummer. I think everyone on this team did everything perfect today. This thing was obviously on rails. Pit crew did an amazing job. Adam [Stevens] called a great race. We did everything we needed to put this Rheem Camry in Victory Lane. It just wasn’t meant to be today.”
Bell’s heartbreak is understandable, given that he was in prime position to win, but the result was still positive for his championship hopes. Despite the loss, he gained crucial points, putting himself in a strong position to secure a spot in the Championship 4 as the playoffs move on to Homestead-Miami and Martinsville.
Although disappointed, Bell’s performance shows that he remains a serious contender in the playoffs. With two races left before the final showdown, he is still in a strong position to make his way into the title battle.
