Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell has named his former teammate and NASCAR legend, Martin Truex Jr., as one of his racing idols. With Truex’s recent retirement from full-time racing, Bell reflected on the immense impact the 2017 Cup Series champion has had on him and the NASCAR community.

Truex, known for his consistency and no-nonsense approach, leaves behind a legacy admired by drivers across the grid. His departure from Joe Gibbs Racing marks the end of an era, but his influence resonates strongly, particularly with Bell, who aspires to emulate Truex’s storied career.

“For me, Martin has always been an idol of mine,” Bell said in a tribute video shared by NASCAR. “I want to be similar to him. Martin Truex does things his way, and I’ve always cherished that about him.”

“An Underrated Champion”

Denny Hamlin, another Joe Gibbs Racing stalwart, also shared his thoughts on Truex’s career, praising his understated yet impactful presence in the sport.

“Martin Truex Jr. is one of the most underrated drivers we have,” Hamlin declared, a testament to Truex’s quiet dominance on the track.

Truex’s journey from being a talented driver in NASCAR’s early ranks to winning a championship and solidifying himself as one of the sport’s greats has inspired many. Despite his accolades, including multiple playoff appearances and numerous race wins, Truex remained grounded, a quality that set him apart in the fast-paced world of motorsports.

A Life Beyond the Track

Beyond racing, Truex is equally renowned for his love of the outdoors. Close friends and colleagues have often noted his passion for hunting and fishing, hobbies he has embraced throughout his career and plans to indulge in during retirement.

“He loves to hunt, he loves to fish. He would rather be on that boat fishing than anything else, even racing,” said a longtime friend in the NASCAR tribute video.

With his retirement, fans and fellow drivers expect Truex to spend much of his time exploring the great outdoors. While his days as a full-time racer may be over, occasional appearances at NASCAR events could still be on the cards, a prospect that would surely excite fans.

Legacy of a Champion

Truex’s departure leaves Joe Gibbs Racing with a fresh lineup, including a new driver stepping into the No. 19 Toyota for the 2025 season. However, the influence of the veteran driver will continue to guide the team’s younger stars, including Christopher Bell, who now carries the torch of excellence for JGR.

As Truex transitions into retirement, the NASCAR community celebrates not just his achievements on the track but also the unique personality and integrity he brought to the sport. His legacy as a champion, mentor, and humble competitor will remain a cherished part of NASCAR history.

“Martin is an idol who always stayed true to himself,” Bell concluded. “I hope to follow in his footsteps and have a career as impactful as his.”

With a career defined by perseverance, class, and success, Martin Truex Jr. will always have a revered place in NASCAR lore—and perhaps, in a fishing boat or hunting blind, far from the roar of engines.
