Christian Horner expressed his concerns regarding Sergio Perez’s safety after the accident on the first lap in Monaco. Red Bull had a disastrous weekend in the race, finishing in sixth place. Perez was involved in a serious incident with the Haas drivers, leading Horner to share his thoughts on the matter.
During the race, Perez lost control and crashed into the barriers on the first lap, causing his RB20 to spin sideways and collide with Magnussen and Hulkenberg. Horner admitted he was extremely worried when he saw the accident on TV screens, with his main focus being the safety of the drivers. Perez’s car was left with only one tire after the collision.
Fortunately, the halo safety device proved effective and no driver was injured. Horner emphasized that the most important thing was to see Perez walk away unharmed moments after the incident.
The race control decided not to take any action regarding the incident, as they often give more freedom to the drivers on the first lap. As a result, this collision was considered a racing incident. However, Horner was dissatisfied with this decision.
Horner expressed surprise at the lack of investigation by the race control. He pointed out that Perez had a wheel off in a narrow part of the track and believed the Haas driver should have backed off. Furthermore, Horner criticized Magnussen’s maneuver as “not very smart,” as it ruined the race for both Perez and his teammate.
It seems that Red Bull did not publicly blame Perez for the collision. However, the Mexican driver will need to avoid any further incidents in future races if he hopes to secure a contract renewal with Milton Keynes for the next season.
