Christian Horner poised to shake up F1: negotiating to buy Alpine shares from Reynolds and Jordan

Christian Horner Set to Make Bold Move into Alpine F1 Ownership: A Game Changer for Formula 1?

In a shocking twist that could reshape the landscape of Formula 1, Christian Horner, the former Red Bull team principal, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire a significant stake in the Alpine F1 team. This could be the beginning of a new chapter for Horner, who has been eyeing a leadership role akin to that of Toto Wolff at Mercedes.

Despite his controversial departure from Red Bull midway through the 2025 season, Horner remains a formidable presence in the F1 community. His ambitions have sparked rumors of his interest in several teams, with Alpine and Ferrari at the forefront. However, recent developments indicate that Horner is now focusing his sights on Alpine, where he could realize his long-standing dream of ownership while steering the team to new heights.

Currently, Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Michael B. Jordan, along with a consortium of other investors, hold approximately 24% of Alpine’s shares. The celebrity duo has been a vibrant presence during race weekends, passionately supporting the French constructor. If Horner succeeds in his bid, he will not only gain a foothold in the team but will also bring his wealth of experience and track record of success to Alpine.

Flavio Briatore, the current team principal, has confirmed ongoing discussions between Horner and Otro Capital, the private investment firm that currently holds the 24% stake in Alpine. Briatore emphasized his long-standing friendship with Horner, stating, “I’ve known Christian for many years. I talk with Christian anyway, but this has nothing to do with me.” He clarified that any negotiations for the shares would need to go through Otro before Renault would approve any buyer.

Briatore further elaborated, “First, you need to buy Otro [its shareholding]. After Renault needs to accept the buyer, and after that, we see what will happen.” He insisted that he has no involvement in the negotiations, leaving the path open for Horner to potentially make his mark at Alpine.

With a legacy of overseeing eight drivers’ titles and six constructors’ championships during his illustrious tenure at Red Bull, Horner’s credentials cannot be overlooked. Briatore expressed confidence in Horner’s capabilities, hinting that anyone who joins Alpine with the right vision could be a valuable asset. “There are a few groups interested. I don’t know how many – six, seven. Every day, there is a new group,” he noted, emphasizing the growing interest in Alpine.

At this point, while the outcome of Horner’s negotiations remains uncertain, the stakes are high. Sources indicate that Horner was compensated handsomely by Red Bull upon his exit, providing him with the financial leverage to pursue this opportunity. The F1 world is on edge, anticipating whether this strategic move will revitalize Alpine and potentially alter the competitive dynamics of the entire series.

As Horner navigates this critical juncture, his extensive experience and proven leadership could be precisely what Alpine needs to climb the ranks in Formula 1. Will he emerge victorious in his quest for ownership, or will this bold ambition fizzle out? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the racing community is buzzing with excitement over what could be a monumental shift in the world of motorsport. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story!
