Christian Horner poised for sensational return to F1 by buying stake in struggling Alpine team

Christian Horner’s Bold Move: Could He Take Control of Alpine F1?

In a thrilling twist to the Formula 1 narrative, former Red Bull CEO Christian Horner is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire a stake in the struggling Alpine F1 team. This potential move could mark Horner’s explosive return to the motorsport arena after a dramatic exit from Red Bull in July, where he spent two decades at the helm, only to be ousted following an intense power struggle with the team’s parent company.

Currently on gardening leave until April 2026, Horner has been seen as a mastermind plotting his comeback, engaging with various teams across the grid to secure a role that offers him the degree of control he desires. Despite his interest in the CEO position at Aston Martin, which ultimately slipped through his fingers as former colleague Adrian Newey stepped into the Team Principal role, Horner’s ambitions remain undeterred.

The Dutch publication De Telegraaf has ignited speculation that Horner could soon find himself at the forefront of Alpine, a team that has faced a tumultuous 2025 season, finishing at the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship—an unprecedented low in its 44-year legacy. With the closure of Renault’s engine facility in Viry-Chatillon and a strategic pivot to Mercedes power for 2026, the team is at a crossroads, raising questions about its future.

Rumors are swirling that Renault Group, the majority stakeholder, may be contemplating a sale of the beleaguered team, especially following the sale of a 24% stake to the American consortium Otro Capital, which has paved the way for celebrity investments in the team. The latest reports suggest Horner, alongside undisclosed investors, is eyeing a bid for a controlling interest as Otro Capital looks to divest its shares.

Adding fuel to the fire, Alpine’s Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore, a longtime friend of Horner, could play a pivotal role in this unfolding drama. Alpine’s Managing Director Steve Nielsen, while downplaying immediate rumors of Horner’s involvement, acknowledged the strong ties between the two, stating, “Flavio and Christian are old friends. That’s no secret. What they’ve talked about, I don’t know. Everything I see and everything I know, there’s no truth in Christian coming to Alpine. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen. This is Formula 1 after all.”

As the F1 grid braces for potential upheaval, the prospect of Horner taking the reins at Alpine could redefine the team’s trajectory and reinvigorate its legacy. With the stakes higher than ever, motorsport enthusiasts are left on the edge of their seats, eager to see if Horner’s ambitions will culminate in a groundbreaking takeover. Will he emerge as the savior of Alpine, or will this be another missed opportunity in his storied career? Only time will tell in the high-octane world of Formula 1.
