Christian Horner criticizes McLaren for ‘incorrect and unjust’ comments about Max Verstappen

Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing’s team principal, has hit back at Mercedes driver George Russell for comments suggesting Red Bull engineers were seeking exits amid ongoing issues at Milton Keynes. With Red Bull enduring a challenging 2024 season following their 2023 dominance, Horner did not hold back, calling out Russell’s remarks as unfounded and questioning the priorities of the young Briton.

Russell’s Comments Spark Controversy

George Russell’s claims about Red Bull engineers looking to jump ship to rival teams added fuel to an already tense rivalry. In his comments, Russell implied that Red Bull’s internal struggles were prompting key personnel to seek opportunities elsewhere—a statement Horner swiftly dismissed.

“I’d be more worried about other issues if I was George,” Horner said. “I don’t know where he thinks, or who he thinks, they were offering their services to, but all the key people have made long-term commitments to the company.”

Horner Defends Red Bull’s Stability

Horner pointed to the loyalty of Red Bull’s engineering core, highlighting figures like Max Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, as examples of individuals firmly committed to the team. He underscored that Red Bull’s critical engineering staff are bound by long-term contracts, dismissing any notion of an internal collapse.

“If you look at people like [Gianpiero Lambiase], and the key members of the engineering team, they are all on long-term contracts,” Horner asserted. “There’s no reason for them to look elsewhere.”

Red Bull’s Rollercoaster 2024 Season

Red Bull entered 2024 off the back of a record-shattering 2023 season, where they won 22 of 23 races and utterly dominated the field. However, the following season proved to be a stark contrast, with the team struggling to maintain its supremacy. The departure of several key figures, combined with a drop in pace, fueled speculation about instability within the team.

Horner acknowledged the difficulties but was quick to remind critics of Red Bull’s prior success.

“One of the less pleasant sides of the business is the lengths rivals go to capitalize on other teams’ issues,” Horner remarked. “You have to remember that we came off a season where we didn’t just dominate, but we annihilated the opposition.”

The Road Ahead for Red Bull

Horner emphasized that while Red Bull faces challenges, the team is focused on regrouping and improving for the upcoming season. With an eye on the 2026 regulation changes, Red Bull is working to rebuild its personnel structure and regain its competitive edge.

“We need to learn from this season and start stronger next year,” Horner said. “It’s about making improvements across the board and being ready for the next evolution of the sport.”

Red Bull vs. Mercedes: Rivalry Heats Up

Horner’s comments also reflect the deepening rivalry between Red Bull and Mercedes, with both teams fighting not just on the track but also in the court of public opinion. For Horner, the focus remains on silencing critics by delivering results in 2025 and beyond.
