Christian Horner Anticipates Another Las Vegas Thriller as Red Bull Looks to Rebound

The Las Vegas Grand Prix is set to light up the Strip once again, and Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner is optimistic about the spectacle, even as his team faces mounting challenges. Reflecting on last year’s inaugural event, which Max Verstappen narrowly won in a thrilling three-way battle, Horner expects the 2024 edition to deliver more fireworks.

Horner: Las Vegas GP Is Built for Drama

Horner’s enthusiasm for the Las Vegas GP stems from the circuit’s unique layout and the challenges it presents.

“One of the best races of the season last year because of the long straights and the slow corners at the end of them. There were huge overtaking opportunities,” Horner remarked. “It was also very cold, and it was difficult to warm up the tyres. It could just be another thriller. And I certainly don’t expect it to disappoint this year.”

The 2023 race saw Verstappen triumph over rivals Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc in a gripping duel, but this year’s event comes with added complexity. Cold track temperatures made tire management a nightmare last season, and similar conditions are expected to challenge drivers again. Horner also noted the difficulty of judging braking points on the circuit’s lengthy straights, which could inject further unpredictability into the race.

Red Bull’s 2024 Struggles

Despite his excitement, Horner is acutely aware of the uphill battle Red Bull faces this season. The RB20, once the grid’s dominant force, has struggled to keep pace with McLaren’s MCL38, a car that has excelled on diverse circuits. Red Bull has slipped to third in the Constructors’ Championship, trailing Ferrari and McLaren in what has been one of the most competitive seasons in years.

Adding to Red Bull’s woes is Sergio Perez’s continued poor form. The Mexican has failed to match Verstappen’s performances and has struggled with consistency all year. With his seat under scrutiny, Perez’s future at Red Bull appears increasingly uncertain, especially with rumors swirling about possible replacements.

Ferrari and McLaren: Red Bull’s Toughest Opponents

Ferrari’s resurgence in the latter half of the season has added another layer of difficulty for Red Bull. The Scuderia’s drivers, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, have delivered consistently strong results, closing the gap to McLaren and creating pressure for Horner’s team. Meanwhile, McLaren’s dynamic duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have turned their MCL38 into the grid’s benchmark, further complicating Red Bull’s bid to recover lost ground.

The Stakes in Vegas

For Red Bull, the Las Vegas GP represents more than just an opportunity to relive past glory—it’s a chance to regain momentum in a season slipping away. However, with McLaren and Ferrari firing on all cylinders, Horner knows his team faces an uphill climb.

As the lights go out in Las Vegas, all eyes will be on whether Verstappen can replicate his 2023 magic or if Red Bull’s struggles will leave the door open for their rivals to shine under the neon lights of the Strip.
